Regrets Come Too Late (Sierra and Johnny) novel Chapter 92

Chapter 92

John frowned quietly as he looked at what Sierra was doing.

Sierra lifted the tall red wineglass, filled to the brim with strong wine. Do you want to check whether this is water?

Come here.John’s voice was low.

Sierra walked over obediently and handed him the glass.

He took it and set it aside, then wrapped his other hand around her wrist and pulled her into his arms.

Her body fell into that familiar, warm chest. Out of habit, she instinctively leaned closer to him, but halfway through the movement, she suddenly caught herself and pushed him away.

John blinked.

Sierra staggered where she stood, glaring at him. You didn’t check.

I checked. It is wine,John said smoothly, following her lead.

Sierra reached for the glass, then John’s hand closed around her slender wrist. I said I’d let it go. You don’t need to drink.

Your word alone isn’t enough.Sierra still didn’t trust him, even when she was drunk. She stubbornly insisted on finishing the drink so that he would have to keep his promise. How am I supposed to know you will not complain and give me a hard time

later?

His hand slid down from her wrist to her small hand, enclosing it. I won’t.

Liar,Sierra said.

When have I ever lied to you?he asked.

You said you wouldn’t make things hard for me back at the Lakeside Villa, but here you are,Sierra said.

Do you actually understand what it means to make things hard for you?John asked.

He knew she was drunk and that no amount of sense would get through to her right now, yet he was still being endlessly patient in explaining it to her.

She was the person he had carefully cherished for five years.

In all that time, he had never been able to bear letting her suffer the smallest pain. He had never spoken harshly to her. Whenever she said she was in pain, he would exhaust every means to calm her and comfort her.

But because he had shielded her too thoroughly, she had never truly learned how the world worked. Anyone else would’ve gotten in way more trouble for how she had performed tonight.

If he had really wanted to make things hard for her, she would not be standing here like this.

There’s no misunderstanding,Sierra insisted. You’re doing this on purpose.

John fell silent.

He gave in. What do you

want?

If I finish this glass, you have to swear you’ll stop making things hard for me.Even drunk, Sierra refused to let her future be ruined by him. We drink this and call it even. I’ll let your lies go, and you’re not allowed to give me problems at Origin Games.

His dark eyes were fixed on her.

Is that clear? Give me a straight answer,Sierra pressed.

John started to say something, but his gaze moved to the wineglass filled with wine. If she really drank that, she would never be able to stay standing.

Alright,he agreed.

You said it. No going back,Sierra said, reaching for the glass.
