Chapter 146
Third Person POV
“You have a visitor,” the guard spoke quietly, hands folded in front of him.
He looked bored, disinterested. Like this was just like any other day for him, and it probably was.
MaryAnne looked up in surprise. She was locked in a cell, her clothes rumpled, her hair dishevelled, and her body curled up in a fetal position on a threadbare mattress. The visitor stepped forward, pulling back the hood of their cloak, and MaryAnne gasped, scrambling to her feet and moving closer to the bars, holding onto them as she looked at her daughter with shock.
She was the last person MaryAnne thought she would ever see.
“You only have a few minutes,” the guard advised, looking around, “make it quick.”
He sounded nervous, thought MaryAnne, slightly bemused. She doubted that the guard or Marissa had permission to be here. This meant Marissa had bribed him to get to MaryAnne. That was a good sign. It also meant MaryAnne hadn’t discovered it yet. The secret. The one MaryAnne kept close to her chest.
Marissa nodded. She handed something to him, and he walked away, leaving both women in private.
“You shouldn’t be here,” MaryAnne whispered, looking around fearfully, “If Alpha Drake finds out….”
If Alpha Drake found out Marissa was here, he would kill her or worse, maybe even take her as a breeder. He was ruthless like that. MaryAnne had discovered the man was more brutal than she could have imagined, and she’d found that out the hard way.
“What has he done to you?” Marissa breathed, looking sick as she took in how frail her mother looked, how weak.
