Raven POV

“Hey, MaryAnne,” I turned my head to look at her, even as I slowly gathered up my strength, my wolf lending me hers, our bodies beginning to tense in anticipation. “I bet you’re missing your old lover, aren’t you? You know the man you kept secret from everybody,” I mocked, “well, I killed him. Slowly. Painfully. He begged me to stop,’ I spat out as MaryAnne tensed, her grip loosening, “he screamed. He cried. I took so much pleasure out of his misery,” I taunted. “I carved him up, and then I put him in the forest for the little animals to feast on his flesh I bet he’s a big old bag of bones now,” I said as she hissed between her teeth, “probably has maggots climbing all over him. He loved you too, you know,” I added gleefully as she clenched her hands into fists, “he died crying dut your name,” I hissed, my eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

What can I say? Go big or go home. It was working too. She was completely focused on me now, forgetting all about Aeress.

I yanked out of the restraints, dropping the cuffs carelessly to the floor. I was free. The burning pain was excruciating, but it was worth it. MaryAnne slowly turned, her eyes widening, even as she glared at me. A strange expression crossed her face. Before I could say anything, Marissa screamed out. “You’re too weak against her mother. We can still leave, it’s not too late.”

It was though. Entirely too late.

“Shut up,” MaryAnne screamed back, “If you’re so concerned, then by all means shift and help me,” she shouted, and Marissa paled, a hesitant look on her face.

MaryAnne was past all reason. She charged at me, knife still in hand, lashing out frantically while I expertly dodged and ducked, my own hands flying as I attacked back, remaining in human form, aware that I needed to conserve my strength while my wounds started to heal.

“Mother, stop! Before it’s too late,” Marissa screamed, “please, let’s just leave before she kills you! You can’t win, “she shrieked.

“You’re welcome to try,” I snarled and then felt it.
