Chapter 165
It was a shame she hadn’t come to the realization sooner, before things got this bad.
MaryAnne made a gurgling sound as I grew tired of her interference, my paws slashing and tearing her throat wide open, spraying me with blood.
She was gone. I felt relieved. Another threat neutralized. Marissa was next once I got my hands on her, although that filled me with regret. She hadn’t participated in the torture, but she’d been there, been the reason that MaryAnne had gotten her hands on me. She’d freed her mother, and I had paid as a result of it.
“Go, Raven!” Aeress cried, “Go and get Marissa before it’s too late! I’m alright. I can tell Jackson’s coming!”
I didn’t want to. But her eyes were shining, and her jaw was clenched tight as she continued to nod at me, urging me to go.
I looked at her and then moved. I ran, sending doors flying everywhere. I sniffed, tracing Marissa’s scent. She was outside, in the forest. She’d shifted in a desperate attempt to get to safety. I growled lowly in my throat, ignoring the pain in my legs, the pain in my chest, and continued to race towards her, my paws thudding loudly on the ground. I dodged debris, leaped over fallen tree trunks, and jumped over bushes to get to her. But then…her scent faded. Just like that. One minute it was there, and then the next…it was gone. I frowned, turning around in circles, sniffing wildly. She couldn’t have vanished into thin air. She had to be somewhere around here. I perked my ears, listening intently. I could hear the sound of running water, hear the sound of quiet paws walking slowly. I grinned, running again. She’d used the stream to mask her scent and no doubt mud, but it wasn’t enough to fool
