Raven POV

I don’t know what made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and indicate to me that danger was on the horizon. A change in the wind, an unsettled feeling in my stomach, the sudden churning in my gut. All of them made me look towards the window, glancing out at the darkening sky, which would soon be filled with rain. I breathed in deeply and turned to Hades, knowing that the time had come. There were no doubts in my mind. It was now or never. Thank god we were well prepared for anything they might throw at us. Now we had to ensure the vulnerable pack members were kept secure, away from the fight.

“Get the women and children into the safe room,” I told him firmly, “they’re coming. I can feel it. I know it in my gut. There’s no time to waste. Everybody needs to get ready.”

To his credit, he didn’t question me. Maybe because of the tone of my voice or the sure expression on my face. His eyes glazed over,, and he began to issue instructions. As women and children made their way into the pack house Hades and I rushed outside, along with Jackson and Aeress. All the warriors stood at the ready. I glanced at Jackson, who already looked prepared.

“Are the traps set?” I asked, already anticipating the answer.

“Yes,” he answered gravely, “and everybody is in position. We’ll know the moment they enter our territory.”

Except I already knew. They were here, and they were determined to annihilate our pack. I wouldn’t allow that to happen. I would die before I allowed another pack member to get hurt on my watch.

Good. I wrung my hands together. I smelt it then. The faintest smell of body odour and sweat mixed with dirt that didn’t belong to the pack members. It came from a distance, but in the direction I had already predicted they would come. Everything was going according to my plan.

“They’re here,” I whispered, “and they’re coming fast.”
