Chapter 211

My eyes widened.

Instinctively, I knew what she was about to do.

Panic overwhelmed me.

“Mother,” I whimpered, “please don’t do this. I promise I’ll do better. I promise I’ll make you proud. I’ll stop questioning everything.”

It made no difference.

It never did.

The bathtub filled with water.

She forced me to my knees as I tried to claw at her hands.

She was stronger than me.

I had no wolf. Nobody to protect me.

She slammed my head into the water as I struggled, my lungs filling with water.

I struggled for breath. My body flailed as she held me down, pinning me.

Just when I thought I was about to lose conscciousness, she pulled me up, and I spluttered, water dripping everywhere.

It wasn’t over.

She did it again and again. It felt like it was never-ending.

Eventually she let go, and I fell to the floor like a drowned rat.

I blinked the water out of my eyes and stared dazedly up at her.

There was no remorse on her face at all.

Instead she was smiling, as though she hadn’t just tried to drown me numerous times.

“Have you learnt your lesson?” she asked calmly.

I nodded frantically, unable to move, my limbs strangely heavy and my body weak.

“Good,” she chirped and then frowned.

“You know I hate punishing you Marissa, but it has to be done. If you just did as you were told then I wouldn’t have to. You only have yourself to blame,” she said quietly.

“I’m sorry,” I choked out, “I’ll do better. I’ll make you proud,” I promised.

Anything to avoid this again.

She tilted her head at me, raking her eyes over my still form, and sighed.

“I guess that’s acceptable. But if you make another mistake,” she warned, leaning closer to me so that her face was merely inches away, “then the next punishment will be far worse.”

She grabbed a towel and helped me up, wrapping it around me as I shivered.

She let the water drain from the bathtub and then tenderly led me back into the bedroom.

Without another word, she helped me change, then hugged me.

“I do love you Marissa. It’s why I’m so strict with you. You’re the only one I can count on,” she murmured, “sq I’m harsh on you. You’ll thank me when you’re older,” she added.

I nodded.

She was doing this for my own good, I thought.

“You’re my precious little girl,” she continued, “the light of my life. Without you, life is meaningless.”

I brightened.

She sighed.

“Maybe I’m afraid I won’t be able to protect you when you’re older. You’re growing up so fast now, becoming a woman, and that’s what scares me. I don’t want you to leave me even though I know you’ll have to.”

She loved me.

I leaned into her embrace and felt warmth spread through me.

I forgave her.

Just like the times before.

She always apologized. Always said sorry.

“I love you, mother,” I whispered, “I always will.”

“Such a good girl,” she said approvingly, “I know you’ll make me proud.”

She kissed me on the forehead, closed her eyes, and then stood up, dusting herself off.

“I have pack business to take care of. Get some rest, and we can start on your training again tomorrow. Pick up where we left off.”

“Okay,” I whispered.

I couldn’t help but wonder if this was normal. If other parents acted this way. My father was dead, had been since I was a baby and I had no one else.

Not even Raven anymore.

I couldn’t speak to her without my mother growing angry. The only time it was acceptable was if I were hurting Raven or insulting her.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but sleep eluded me.
