Chapter 213
“Damien,” she protested, “we’re friends. I’m only looking out for you. I know that I’ve been a little forward,” she admitted, “but can you blame me? Together, we would be formidable. You would gain all the connections my family have. I’m one of your most powerful warriors,” she reminded me, “and everybody in this pack likes me. I’ve done nothing but defend everybody when it’s needed, and I’ve worked hard to make sure that I don’t take my status for granted. Between us, the pack would only grow stronger.”
“I don’t love you Alice,” I sighed, pushing my plate away, my appetite gone.
“Love can come later,” she pressed, “it’s not the first time an Alpha has chosen a mate that’s beneficial to him I can provide you with heirs, I’m fertile. Think of how strong our pups would be.”
Why couldn’t she have had this discussion in private?
I could tell that others were listening, even as they pointedly kept their heads turned away.
Most of them agreed with Alice which irritated me.
They wanted her as their Luna, because she’d proven time and time again the extent to which she would go to
protect everyone.
Her heart was in the right place, but love?
I would never have that kind of feeling towards her. Her beauty was mesmerizing but that was the only thing that
attracted me.
Everything else such as her personality was off-putting.
She was too cocky, too condescending.
She walked around the pack as though she owned it. She used her position to abuse her authority.
It hadn’t escaped my notice.
But the pack members willingly did as she ordered. They respected her.
It made it hard to reign her in. To order her to stop. Because she never struck anyone, she merely bossed them around.
I rubbed my chin in frustration.
“Alice, this is a discussion for another time,” I growled, “right now is not appropriate.”
“Fine,” she said grudgingly and then stood up, putting a hand on my shoulder as I gritted my teeth. “But give it some thought, Damien, that’s all I ask. Your father would approve,” she added, laying it on thick.
My father respected Alice but didn’t like her.
He, like me could see what was underneath the surface but he was too polite to tell her that to her face. Instead, he’d adopted civility towards her and Alice had taken that as a sign he approved of her. A sign that he would readily agree to his son marking her.
She was wrong.
She let go and then walked away, her hips sashaying, her smile still on her face.
I exhaled. Aaron glanced at me.

“That was, awkward,” he murmured.
I exhaled.
“She’s determined,” I mumbled. “It’s irritating.”
Aaron eyed me.
“What?” I almost snapped at him when he turned his eyes away. “If you have something to say, then spit it out
He sighed.
“She’s not wrong Damien. Most of the pack hopes you will take Alice for your Luna. They think you would make a powerful couple. That, together the two of you will make this a pack that’s formidable to our enemies.”
“The pack needs to mind it’s own business,” I rasped, “Alice will never become my Luna.”
“Think strategically, Damien. If you find your mate and find love, then I fully support you making her your Luna, but if you don’t?” he said quietly, “then maybe you need to think with your brain and not your heart. The pack needs a Luna,” he added guiltily, “and you’re getting older. Maybe just consider it. You don’t have to decide now, but think about it.”
