Chapter 223
“I haven’t given much thought to it,” I hedged, while Alice continued to look at me expectantly. “I mean, Alice, you must be busy,” I tried.
The hell we’re taking her. We should be taking our mate! What are you thinking? Marissa is innocent you big buffoon! Taking Alice is like shouting out that she’s going to be our chosen mate. It will humiliate Marissa.
We’ve been over this. Marissa isn’t innocent, no matter how hard you try to protest to the contrary. As for taking Alice, at least she’s capable of holding her own. I need somebody who is able to form relationships with other packs, and she’s always been good with people.
My wolf did not like that in the slightest.
Our mate would be just as capable. You’re biased because of her past but she’s sweet and loving, Damien. I don’t believe she harmed Alice. I think there’s been a mistake or misunderstanding. I have a hard time believing Marissa would take on one of the strongest warriors in our pack over nothing.
You’re letting the mate bond take over your common sense. I’m not biased, I’m just realistic. Not to mention Marissa wouldn’t have known that Alice was one of our strongest warriors. She simply attacked without provocation.
You’re an idiot. You can’t see what’s right in front of your face, he growled.
Since when are you so against Alice? I know you’ve not really liked her, but now you’re downright malicious when it comes to her. Don’t you think you’re overreacting?
I tolerated Alice before, but not now. Every time she touches us, I want to bite her arm off and snap her neck. She might be a strong warrior, but there’s nothing else to brag about. Anybody with half a brain can tell how badly she wants you to make her our chosen mate and I’m warning you now, Damien, it’s not going to happen. I will make you fucking impotent for the rest of your life if you so much as attempt it.
He meant every single word, which was terrifying. I’d never heard my wolf speak to me with such venom in his voice before. He’d never threatened me like this either.
He really didn’t like Alice. But there was no one else to take with me that would be able to stand amongst the strongest Alphas and Lunas in the country and still remain confident. Alice had that self-assurance that drew people to her. She was my means of forming more relationships with other packs. At this point, I didn’t think I had a choice.
You’re going to regret this, Damien. If you take Alice to the gala, our mate will never forgive us. This is my final warning to you. Whatever your decision is, you’re going to have to live with it.
The silence coming from him after that was deafening.
I refocussed my attention on Alice and Aaron, who were standing there frowning at me.
“Sorry, I got distracted,” I murmured and then looked at Alice, who straightened up, a knowing look on her face.
“Alice, I would be really appreciative if you were willing to go to the gala with me. That is if you don’t mind?” 1 asked gruffly.
I could feel the rage from my wolf even as I blatantly ignored it.
I was doing what was right for the pack.
“Of course, Damien! I would be honored to be your date,” she beamed, playing with her braid and smiling so wide

I wondered how her face didn’t crack.
“Good,” I fought to keep my voice even, “you have a week to prepare. Dress formal, but I guess you already know that.”
She laughed.
“Naturally. It’s not my first rodeo. It’s my first time with you, though, Damien,” she breathed, “so I’ll make sure to take extra care of my appearance.”
That didn’t sit well with me, but I merely shook my head and then excused myself, unable to stand being so close to Alice any longer.
The band around my chest continued to squeeze, and I swallowed hard, unable to break free of the uncertainty that swept over me.
Maybe a month in the dungeon was too harsh after all, when it came to my mate?
Maybe I had been a little too overbearing.
Why was it when it came to her that I couldn’t think straight? Why did she have such a hold on me?
