Chapter 224
Marissa POV
It’s cold. So cold I can see my breath. I shiver, sitting on the mattress, arms wrapped tightly around myself. I’d been given clothes to cover up my nudity, but they were thin, ragged, and barely better than rags. I rocked back and forth, glancing up at the windows and eying them longingly. There was no hope of escape with the bars, but what I was desperate for right now was sunshine. Sunshine, plenty of water, and the type of food that didn’t make me feel like vomiting when I looked or smelled it.
It’s been more than a week without Damien even checking on me. More than a week since I’ve heard his voice or seen his face. More than a week of having guards staring at me, keeping watch as though I’m about to do something inexcusable.
My wolf is weak. The wolfsbane keeps her at bay. I can’t speak to her, can barely feel her. The thought of losing her is more than I can bear. She wasn’t to blame for this. She was innocent, not that it mattered.
The door swings open. For a moment, my heart skips a beat, and my chest loosens. I think it’s Damien and I get to my feet, smoothing down my clothes and attempting to look halfway presentable.
Has he changed his mind? Is he going to let me go now? Has he found out that Alice was telling lies? Does he know I’m innocent now? That I would never do something to harm another pack member? Has he finally realized I’m not the girl he thought I was?
I hated him, and yet I yearned for him at the same time. The mate bond was only growing stronger, and even though he’d put me here, I still wanted him. It was infuriating. I wanted to be angry, I wanted to scream at him, and yet I wanted to touch him, kiss him and let him hold me.
Fucking mate bond.
To my horror, it wasn’t Damien that stepped out of the shadows, but the lying, manipulative bitch who was the reason I was in here in the first place.
Alice. She looked triumphant at me, motioning for the guards to leave. Bastards left without a word. Clearly she didn’t want any witnesses for whatever she was about to say.
“You look,” she said conversationally, a wicked grin on her face, “a little worse for wear, Marissa.”
“I wonder why,” I shot back, “what the fuck do you want Alice? Isn’t it enough that you’ve put me here with your damn lies, you bitch?”
She smirked.
“You should be angry at Damien. He’s the one who believed me in the first place. Doesn’t matter though. You’re nothing to him. Otherwise, he would have visited you by now. I guess his mate is simply a burden to him,” she sighed, and I stiffened.
“You know.”
“Of course. Aaron accidentally let it slip, stupid man. I always know. Everybody thinks I’m the little darling of this pack, the woman who holds everything together. Nobody ever suspects me of being anything more than the obedient, caring warrior who would do anything to protect the pack. Well, those that are still living anyway,” she giggled.
“You’re a fucking psycho,” I said flatly.
She only grinned at me.

Part of me wanted to lunge at her and claw the fucking smile of her face but the bars from the cell were in my damn way.
“He’s starting to realize how valuable I am to the pack now. Without your interference, he’s seriously considering making me his chosen mate,” she crowed, “soon he’ll know rejecting you will be the best decision he could make. I’m wearing hitn down,” she breathed, her eyes glinting, “and it will only be a matter of time.”
“So why bother coming to see me? Don’t tell me you’re threatened by me,” I scoffed.
She laughed and shook her head. Patted her pocket and slowly withdrew a key as I stared at it suspiciously.
