Chapter 228
Marissa POV
It was dark. Pitch black. All around me, all I could see was darkness, my hands reaching out only to touch what felt like air. I frowned, feeling confused.
Where was I?
Was this death? Had I died as Alice had intended? Memories came flooding back of Alice sedating me, hanging me as I struggled to breathe. I’d been helpless. Vulnerable. Inside my mind, I’d screamed out for Damien, but he never showed. He’d left me there, in the dungeon to rot, and this was the consequence. Maybe now that I was dead, he and Alice could get together like she wanted.
Laughter fills the air. I cringe. It’s impossible, but I know that sound. It fills me with dread. She’s dead. She’s gone, but somehow, her voice fills the air, and as I awkwardly turn around, my feet feeling like they are standing on black clouds, I see her. She’s just as I remember.
“You’re dead,” I blurted out.
She laughs.
“Oh come now dearest daughter, is that any way to greet your mother?” she sneered.
I scoffed.
“You are not my mother. You might have given birth to me, but that doesn’t make you my mother. You manipulated me, you abused me, and I let you because I wanted your approval. I should have seen you for the monster you are,” I spat out.
“Oh, please. I did everything for you. I brought you into the world, and I planned for your future. Nobody else was as invested as I was in you. Don’t play the victim,” she sneered.
“Was it love that made you lock me in a closet for days because I failed a lesson? Was it love when you drowned me over and over again to make a point? Was it love when you told me if I fooled around with any of the unmated male pack members, you would ensure they disappeared? Everything you did was designed to hurt me, to isolate me, and to control me. That’s not love,” I growled.
“It hurts me to hear you speak like that. I loved you, Marissa. I cared for you. I made sure you would be the perfect luna, but you just had to go and ruin it,” she hissed, “and you are the one who got me killed.”
Her voice is filled with accusation.
The audacity.
Part of me isn’t sure if this is real or some sort of sick nightmare. I just want it to stop, but she steps closer to me, her eyes burning into my very soul.
“You’ve always been a disappointment,” she snarled, “always failing at every task I gave you. So stupid you couldn’t even hold onto one man without losing him to that bitch Raven.”
“Don’t call her that,” I snapped, “if anybody is the bitch it’s you.”
She smiled coldly.
“Do you think he’s ever going to love you? Your mate abandoned you. He put you in a cell like a common criminal, and he didn’t believe you when you tried to tell him the truth. You’re just a burden to him. A side piece. He’s never

going to make you his Luna. You’re too pathetic,” she scorned.
It felt like a whip struck me. She’d always known how to go for the jugular.
“Why are you here? Why can’t you just leave me alone!” I demanded. “Haven’t you done enough damage?”
“Haven’t you realized it yet?” Her voice dripped with venom, “this space,” she laughed and gestured to the darkness surrounding us, “is the in between. When you’re between life and death. Where you have to face your greatest fears and where nightmares come true. Unly,” she whispered chillingly, “I’m not a nightmare, I’m something much worse.”
