Rejected, Abused, I Fall for the Forbidden Alpha (by Riley Scott) novel Chapter 231

Chapter 231

I moved closer, careful to remain perfectly silent, stalking towards her and stopping a short distance away. My hearing was sensitive, and I could pick up the conversation easily.

“She’s still in a coma. Hasn’t woken up yet. Bitch was meant to die,” Alice whispered, thinking she wouldn’t be overheard, “you better hold up to your end of the bargain.”

I could hear a voice on the other end of the phone, but couldn’t make out what they were saying, let alone if it was a female or a male’s voice.

“How do I know I can trust you? This could just be a trick,” Alice snapped, “you know very well I don’t want money and if you are who you say you are, then why are you so determined to have me take care of things? You told me you would be here to help,” she hissed, “and so far all I’ve gotten from you is empty words and useless excuses. Do you think I can continue doing this without his notice?” she scoffed.

More words from the other end of the line.

Alice exhaled deeply.

“You have one week,” she told the other person firmly, “one week or you’ll be too late. As it is, Marissa might still wake up,” she said coldly, “and if that happens, there’s no telling what she might do to retaliate or get Damien to believe her.”

Bitch! She’d lied to me. She’d told me Marissa had been the one to start everything and feigned concern when Marissa ended up in the hospital. Had she been responsible for both incidents? Was Alice the reason Marissa might lose her life?

How could I have been so stupid!

How could I have been so blind!

I was the world’s worst mate. I should have seen the signs. I should have noticed that Alice would go this far in order to become my Luna, but I’d thought we had even ground to stand on. I thought she knew that it might not be a possibility, but by considering her as my chosen mate, I’d opened the gates for her to hurt my real one. I was the world’s biggest idiot. Not once had I even remotely considered that Alice might betray me this way.

“I mean it. Damien’s mine. If Marissa wakes up, then you deal with her. I only want what you offered me,” Alice snarled, “and then we all go our merry ways. I become Damien’s Luna, and you get your revenge. An eye for an eye. I want no part of anything more. I won’t endanger my chance to become Damien’s, and if you so much as think of doublecrossing me,” her voice went dark, “then I’ll make sure you fucking regret it, you bitch.”

I heard her shut off the call and quickly sped back to the function room, stepping inside as she slowly walked out from behind the tree and scanned her surroundings to make sure she wasn’t overheard.

I moved further into the crowd and took hold of a drink, almost gulping it down as she spotted me and began to make her way towards me.

I couldn’t let slip what I’d overheard. She was working with someone. The urge to simply place her in the dungeon back home and torture her for information was strong, but Alice would simply resist and refuse to say anything. My Alpha voice would only help me so far, and if Alice got wind that I was even slightly suspicious, she might tip off the other person before I discovered their identity.

I couldn’t afford that while there was still a threat to Marissa.

I was going to have to play it safe and have my tech specialist look into Alice’s movements over the last few days.

In the meantime, I would put extra guards to watch over my mate and ensure her safety.

“Damien, is everything okay? You look kind of pale,” Alice peered at me in concern.

I forced a fake smile to my face, pretending everything was fine.

“Just a headache,” I rasped as my wolf struggled to contain himself, angry at everything that had occurred. “I’ll be fine,” I assured her, gritting my teeth.
