Chapter 232
Marissa POV
“You’re awake.”
I slowly turn my head to the side and eye the man next to me. I feel a surge of disappointment as I realize it’s not Damien. Maybe it’s for the best because as memories come flooding back to what Alice did to me, anger takes its place. I don’t know if I can forgive him for what he did. I don’t know that I want to. He’s the reason I’m in here The reason I almost died.
“When can I go?” I rasped.
Aaron, whose name I do happen to know, looks at me, concerned.
“Go? Where are you going to go?” he asked slowly as though I was some dumb child.
I gave a scornful laugh.
“Don’t worry, I don’t have any intentions of returning to the Shadow Pack. I just want to leave. I don’t care if I become a rogue. Anything is infinitely better than being at that bastard Damien’s mercy again.”
I guess I’m angrier than I thought.
I slip my legs over the edge of the bed and make a move to stand up as Aaron rushes to my side, his hands spread out as he approaches me like I’m some sort of wild animal.
“Whoa there, slow down. Don’t do anything rash,” he begins as I yank out the IV and glare at him, “Damien will want to talk to you now you’re awake.”
“Then where is he?” I demanded, arching a brow and looking pointedly at the otherwise empty room.
Aaron looked nervous. I stared at him harder, openly daring him to lie to me.
“He’s at the gala, but he’ll be back soon,” he started, and I laughed and shook my head in disgust.
“Let me guess, with Alice?” I said my tone dripping with fake sweetness.
“It’s not like that, I mean, damnit if you just let Damien explain,” Aaron argued.
“I have no interest in anything Damien has to say,” I snapped, standing on my feet and swaying slightly. “As far as I’m concerned, he means nothing to me anymore. I’m done,” I declared vehemently and realized I meant it.
Even if my mother were alive and coming for me, I wouldn’t stay here. I didn’t need Damien or his protection. I could do well enough on my own.
“Marissa, this isn’t a good idea,” Aaron breathed and tried to take hold of my arm.
I yanked it off me. Grabbed the clothes from the chair and began to put them on. They were slightly too large but it was better than the hospital gown. I didn’t even care that Aaron was in the room, although he turned his back in order to give me some sort of semblance of privacy.
I made my way towards the door. I could see doctors out in the corridors and knew I had to hurry before they came rushing in and tried to prevent me from leaving.
“Marissa, just wait. Give Damien a chance to explain. You’re his mate,” Aaron tried to guilt me.
I just laughed. I couldn’t believe this man’s audacity. Damien had no interest in claiming me for his mate. All he’d

given me was pain and humiliation. Chosen Alice’s side over mine. Shown me that no matter what, he would always hold resentment towards me in his heart. After Darius, I had resolved to find somebody to love me, to find a man who wouldn’t hurt me, and Damien was not that man.
It was better off this way.
I owed Damien nothing. No loyalty. No commitment. I was going to walk away from this pack and find a future without him in it.
Even if it pained me to do so.
I stormed out of the room and headed for the exit. I could already hear Aaron on the phone, attempting to contact Damien, but if he was at the gala it would take considerable time for him to get back here. I would be long gone by then.
I ran. Pushed through the crowd of people and made it safely outside. I didn’t stop. I made my way directly/ towards the forest, which was a fair distance away.
If I didn’t do this now then I might never get the chance to. One look into Damien’s eyes and I might lose my resolve.
