Chapter 241
“I want to feel safe,” I told him, “I don’t want to be looking over my shoulder and wondering when the next attack from Alice is. When you announce me that she’s going to escalate her behaviour, and she’s already tried to kill me once. Next time she might succeed,” I finished grimly.
“I’ll put extra guards on you. You won’t be alone for even one second. I’ll protect you,” he insisted vehemently.
“How do I know I can trust you?” I whispered, feeling slightly defeated.
What if all of this was just another trick of his?
“I swear I will do everything in my power to prove to you I’m going to be different. I owe you so much, Marissa and I’m not naive enough to believe you’ll forgive me straight away. But I need you too,” he told me earnestly, need somebody who knows that Alice is up to no good and who can help me get to the bottom of whatever she’s planning. I’ve got one week to figure it out, and I have no idea where to start.”
One week. It wasn’t a great deal of time. I bit my lower lip, debating what to do.
“You can’t announce me yet,” I realized, “or she’ll know something’s up. If she thinks that things have changed between us, she might change what she’s plotting.”
“Does that mean you’ll come back? That you’ll,” he gulped, a look of hope appearing on his face, “that you’ll take back the rejection?”
Take back the rejection. Form the mate bond again. It was difficult to process what he was asking, but I also knew that this was the time to make a choice. One that I was hoping wasn’t going to bite me in the ass.
“I, Marissa Sinclair, take back my rejection and accept Damien Shadow as my mate,” I said evenly.
Í felt the bond snap back into place. Warmth spread through me. I felt whole again. My wolf purred with delight.
Before I could move, Damien rushed to me and lifted me off my feet, twirling me around in his arms as though I weighed nothing.
It was almost like a dream. I’d wanted to feel him hold me the first time I saw him with the mate bond in place but he’d kept me at arm’s length.
Then he put me on the ground and I felt my breath hitch as he looked deeply into my eyes, his face bending closer until his mouth was mere inches away.
I waited with bated breath, wondering if he would have the confidence to take the opportunity. I sure as hell wasn’t going to make the first move, no matter how much I might want to.
Silence.
The tension grew stronger between us. He was so close I could see the darkness of his eyes, see the thickness of his eyelashes, and see the dimple in his cheek.
He never failed to make me lose my breath. He was so handsome it didn’t seem real.
I licked I my lips nervously, and his eyes darted to them. I felt nervous. I went to take a step back, and his arms shot out, gripping me tightly around the waist and pulling me to his chest as I almost squealed in surprise.
His lips pressed against mine. My eyes closed as he gently opened my mouth, his tongue slowly sliding in and exploring my mouth as I moaned. He deepened the kiss, but every movement was designed to be tender, to express the love he felt for me. It was beyond sweet. He was treating me with adoration and as though I was

fragile in his arms. I was lost in the sensations, my fingernails digging into his arms as my mouth opened wider and I allowed him to plunder me.
I’d died and gone to heaven.
He pulled back and examined me, no doubt seeing the swollen lips and dishevelled hair along with the gleam in my eyes.
I swayed on my feet, feeling disoriented.
If he kissed like that, then I dreaded to think what it might be like when we progressed further in the relationship.
Something told me I would have no complaints in the bedroom.
I blushed at the thought.
“You’re so beautiful,” Damien murmured, and my smile widened.
“Let’s go home,” Damien whispered, holding his hand out to me.
