Chapter 243
“It was a burner phone she used. No trace of any calls she made.”
I suspected as much.
“Is she meeting any other pack members?”
“No. But her financial records indicate she recently purchased a large amount of sedatives,” he shoved some papers in front of me, and I scanned them frowning.
“This is enough to take out a small army,” I muttered in concern.
“Or a pack,” Aaron said grimly.
“What else did you find?”
“She’s been spreading rumors about Marissa, telling everybody how malicious she is, how she’s trying to get her claws into you, how she’s manipulating you to become your Luna. She’s making it so that everybody hates Marissa and encouraging them to treat her badly.”
“Still not surprising. I never realized how vicious she could be.”
“She also owns an apartment in the town nearby that’s occupied by humans,” he gave me another piece of paper, “the deed’s in her name. It’s a small, dingy, one bedroom in a shady part of town. It took a long time to find it. She must have bribed somebody to keep it from official records, but they forgot there was a digital trace.”
“She has to be hiding something in that apartment,” I said quietly.
“Or someone,” Aaron pointed out.
“When was the last time she visited?” I asked slowly.
“No idea. There are no cameras, no way to track. It’s the type of building that nobody asks questions about, and those who live in the building are a mixture of drug dealers, weapons dealers, addicts, and scammers. The perfect place to hide,” he said with a shrug.
“Somewhere you can be invisible,” I murmured.
“Exactly.”
I looked at him. He already knew what I was going to say, but I said it out loud anyway.
“I have to see what’s in that apartment. Whatever she’s hiding or who she’s meeting has to be there.”
“If either of us leaves, she’ll become suspicious,” Aaron pointed out, sounding concerned.
“Not if you go. I’ll tell her you’re dealing with important business. You do it all the time; she won’t even consider that you’re doing something else. I’ll remain but take some warriors you trust with you, Aaron. There’s no telling what you might find. I want this done as quickly and quietly as possible, do you hear me?”
He nodded.
“You don’t have to tell me what’s at stake, Damien. I love this pack just as much as you do, and I’ll protect everyone even if I have to die to do it. I’m just sorry I didn’t see Alice for the person she was.”
“She had us all fooled. Nobody saw what was underneath the surface so don’t feel too bad.”

After all, I had failed to see it as well and I was an Alpha for heaven’s sake. My father would be so disappointed in me. Which reminded me that I was going to have to inform him of what was going on. I knew he would insist on coming back, and I hated to cut his travelling short. It couldn’t be helped, though. He would kill me if I kept him in the dark about this.
“When do I leave?” Aaron said with determination. “If I get some men together without Alice’s knowledge, I can leave within the hour. It will take approximately half an hour to get there.”
“Do it. Make sure you blend in with the humans. Have the warriors change clothes. I don’t want anybody wondering why you were there or tipping Alice off. Take an IT specialist in case the apartment has an alarm.”
“I’m on it,” Aaron said, already beginning to mind-link his men.
