Chapter 258
Damien POV
MaryAnne Sinclair looks triumphant as she raises her hand, and I stare dumbly at the large canister filled with green liquid. Automatically, I take a step back, already mind-linking my men, but she smashes it on the ground, and green smoke fills the air..
It spreads, the wind sending it flying in our direction.
There’s something unnatural about it. Something nefarious.
The first wolves to breathe it in go still and then fall to the floor convulsing, their bodies shifting to human form and falling unconscious.
Wolfsbane and some form of sedative. Something else as well but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
“Don’t breathe it in,” I roared, several wolves running backwards, desperate to escape the dangerous combination.
MaryAnne giggled. She sounded crazy. Unhinged. Like this was all just a big game to her.
I covered my mouth, and Marissa did the same, along with Hades. We were the only three still in human form. We stared in shock as the smoke continued, almost as though it was drawn to the wolves, all of them hitting the ground one by one until it was just us three left standing.
“What did you do?” Marissa screamed, “You monstrous bitch.”
“Calm down,” MaryAnne smirked, “they aren’t dead. At least not yet. I have the antidote,” she held it up, “those chemicals,” she shrugged, “also had a fatal enzyme in it. If you don’t use this antidote, they’ll die in several hours, painfully, slowly,” she emphasized, “but I’m not heartless,” she sneered, “I would be happy to make an exchange.”
I clenched my hands into fists, glaring at the woman with hatred. Marissa looked stunned, her face ashen as she looked at the grounds with littered bodies all over.
“What kind of exchange?” I said with gritted teeth.
I had an idea of what she was going to say. I dared her to speak the words, trying desperately to come up with some kind of plan.
“Surrender your lives, all three of you, and I’ll let your pack members live. Refuse and well..” she sighed, “you already know the consequences.”
“Your grudge is with me,” Marissa spoke, moving forward slightly and ignoring my attempts to grab her, “not Damien, not Hades. I’m the one you want. I’m the one who disappointed you,” she breathed, “take your anger out on me, not them.”
“Marissa,” I shouted, “don’t. I’m not going to let you sacrifice yourself, don’t even think about it!”
She didn’t even glance at me. Her entire focus was on the woman whom she had once called her mother.
MaryAnne’s smile grew twisted.
“Yes you disappointed me. My plans all failed because you chose to grow a conscience. I raised you to be coldhearted and ruthless, but you always managed to keep just a hint of kindness in you that I could never extinguish, no matter how hard I tried.”
“You wanted me to be like you, but that will never happen,” Marissa screamed, the wind making her hair flow

“You were meant to be my redemption. My path to power, instead, you gave it all away,” MaryAnne shrieked, ” and for what? A measly mate? You could have had riches, you could have had power. You could have been Luna of one of the strongest packs in the country and made something of yourself. Love is nothing but weakness!” she raged.
“Love is stronger than anything in this world,” Marissa countered, her shoulders straight, “the only weak one is you. Tell me something,” she shouted at the top of her lungs as MaryAnne smirked at her, “are you my biological mother or is it all lies?”
“You were never my true daughter. Just a pawn. I miscarried that day, and I swapped my child and took you instead. Blood never mattered to me. All I wanted was an heir or a daughter to increase my status.”
“Who were they. Who are my parents?” Marissa’s voice shook.
MaryAnne giggled, sounding slightly hysterical.
