Chapter 262
Marissa POV
Pregnant. I stared at the stick in my hands, my mouth going dry, my hands shaking slightly.
Was that what the witch had meant when she said four? Had she known?
I close my eyes, breathing steadily, forcing the tension out of my budy. Images of baby Grace, Raven’s daughter, flood my mind. She was beautiful, but every time I held her, I got nervous that I might drop her. My relationship with Raven had gone a long way, and now we were almost like sisters again, even without blood linking us together. I knew she would be thrilled.
The thought brought a small smile to my face.
How could I have missed this? How could I have missed the signs? I blamed stress, but I also knew I hadn’t exactly been checking in on myself lately.
“Sweetheart,” Damien walks into the bedroom, and I can sense him searching for me.
I stand up on shaking legs and smooth down my dress. I open the door of the bathroom and walk inside the room, the stick held protectively behind my back.
We are married now. It had been a simple ceremony with a few witnesses and Damien’s family. But I still didn’t know how he would react to this.
He sees the worry in my face and narrows his eyes, crossing to me and gently taking hold of my chin.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” he demands.
I feel the warmth of his touch, see the concern in his eyes. I shudder and then give a small smile, leaning slightly
into his embrace.
“Nothing’s wrong,” I hiccuped as he frowned, “well, not exactly,” I clarified.
He continued to stare at me blankly.
I huffed and then slowly, reluctantly pulled the stick out and silently handed it to him, my nerves a red-hot mess.
Silence. He stared at the stick with glazed eyes.
Then.
“Holy fucking shit,” he shouted at the top of his lungs, excitement in his voice, “I’m going to be a dad! Tell me this is true, Marissa!” he grabbed me and twirled me in the air as I fought back nausea, my giggles filling the air.
I smacked him on the shoulder and he carefully put me back down, the stick lying forgotten on the floor now.
“Yes, you’re going to be a father,” I rasped as he pulled me into him, “are you happy?” I bit my lip.
Old doubts flooded my mind. Memories of being hated, of feeling like I wasn’t enough, cause me to stiffen,
“Honey, I’m overjoyed!” Damien rushes to reassure me, “I can’t wait to meet our pup. I hope she’s a little girl just like you! A little princess,” he breathed.
“What if it’s a boy?” I asked, arching a brow.
“Then we have a little prince that’s with luck not like me as a child,” he said unapologetically, “because I was a
1/2
hellion.”
I snorted. I had no doubts he was telling the truth.
He kissed me tenderly on the forehead, his breathing growing even, his expression smoothing. He looked pearaful
“You’re the greatest gift I could have ever asked for,” he murmured, “do you knew that?”
Tears trickled down my cheek
“Wait till we tell father he’s going to have another grandchild,” Damien brightened, “he’s going to cry, I just know it.”
I sniffled.
Damien’s father hadn’t been enamoured with me when he came back from his vacation but when he’d seen how happy I made his son, he had slowly thawed towards me.
“I love you, Damien,” I whispered, “I always will. I hope you know that.”
“I do,” he pushed back a loose tendril of hair and gazed into my eyes, “and for as long as I live, you will be the only woman I have eyes for or love in this world. You, Marissa Shadow,” he emphasized, “have a permanent hold on my heart, and I hope you never let go.”
So poetic. I closed my eyes, anchoring myself in this moment, my heart swelling with love.
I had everything I needed. I’d accepted I would never get to know my biological family, but I had gained another family just as protective and fiercely loyal. The family I never dreamed I had, and for me? That was enough.
