Chapter 272
Aaron POV
The pack house is always swarming with shifters, drunk ones, stoned ones, and ones who are trying to seduce the omegas. The whole thing is filled with debauchery. It disgusts me. Alpha Jacob seems to be proud of it as he exhales from the cigar he’s smoking, his eyes dancing with amusement.
“You’re a bit tense, Beta Aaron,” he commented as I struggled to maintain my composure, “is something the matter?”
I clenched my jaw and shook my head. I didn’t know what he was playing at. I’d already made it clear I had no interest in these kinds of shenanigans. I wasn’t about to be swayed by expensive cigars or loose women.
“You know I thought I saw you chatting to one of my pretty little omegas before,” he said, fixating his eyes on me, “I would have thought a man of your stature would simply ignore those who are beneath you.”
This bastard. He was trying to get a rise out of me.
“I have never viewed omegas as less than me. They work hard and are loyal to the pack. What more could you want in those serving us?”
“How novel,” he drawled, chuckling, “but surely you can see they aren’t good for anything but servitude? Breeding perhaps, but once an omega, always an omega. Simply put, they are destined to always be at the bottom of the social hierarchy.”
“That’s old-fashioned,” I said evenly, fighting the urge to punch the smug bastard in his face, “at the shadow pack, nobody cares about one’s status, not even when it comes to their mates.
“You would take an omega as a mate?” he sounded repulsed at the very notion of it. “You don’t care about your reputation or bloodline very much do you? Your children would be weak because of their mother’s lineage. Those of us in power, who hold higher statuses, should always be mindful of only accepting the very best that life has to offer. I would never dream of weakening my children for the so-called love of a woman. I intend to only have the strongest mate I can find.”
“I prefer love,” I said coldly, “somebody to cherish and build a life with. A lifetime of misery is simply more than I’m willing to bear.”
“Yet, a chosen mate can only strengthen your standing and connections with other packs. An omega is useless, nothing more than a pretty doll to have by your side. What possible benefits would they bring you?” he scoffed.
“Is there a point to this conversation?” I asked frostily, “Or are you trying to simply make idle small talk?”
“You wound me with your words,” he said gravely, “I was simply trying to have a conversation with you, Beta Aaron, nothing more. Why are you so aggrieved?” he smirked.
“We’re here to discuss business,” I growled, “not make idle chit chatter, my time is valuable and so is yours.”
“Very well,” he nodded, the smirk vanishing off his face, “if that’s the case, then what is it you require. I handed -over the information you asked.”
“You think I didn’t notice you cooked the books?” I asked, staring at him incredulously, “I’m not stupid, Alpha Jacob. You might think my title simply requires brute force, but I’m also highly skilled in technology and hacking. This is not your true financial records. You’re in the red by a staggering amount. You’ve wasted a lot of money on drugs, booze, and hookers instead of maintaining the pack house. Even food has been kept to a bare minimum. How long were you planning to conceal this? Do you think our pack is stupid?”
1/2
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” he blustered, “perhaps one of my men made a mistake, but I assure you, we didn’t intentionally lie to you.”
“Save it,” I said bluntly, “you lied to save face, Alpha Jacob. Not only that, but your team of warriors? Their fighting skills are abysmal.”
“They’ve been trained to fight extensively in wolf form,” he argued, “training in human form is simply a waste of time.”
Was he for real? Was he truly that stupid?
“If they are drugged with wolfsbane, they would be dead within seconds with those dreadful fighting skills. Everybody knows how important it is to be effectively trained in both human and wolf form for that reason.”
