Aaron POV

I was tired and feeling slightly guilty. My meeting with Damien and Marissa had gone on far into the afternoon, and Asher had to entertain herself. I would make it up to her, I vowed, frowning as I took in the empty bedroom.

Had I somehow missed her on my way upstairs? I rushed downstairs and checked the main living areas, my frown deepening as I failed to find her.

“Marissa,” I grabbed her arm as she passed me, “do you know where Asher is? I can’t find her.”

“I haven’t seen her, and I’ve been through the house. Could she be on the grounds? Have you tried to mind-link her? She’s part of the pack now, so you should be able to,” she reminded me.

I attempted it. Nothing. It was like something was blocking me.

“Something’s wrong.” My voice rose as I rushed outside, Marissa following me.

I knew Damien wouldn’t be too far behind.

“Nobody outside has seen her. We’ll try the forest. Split up; it will be faster. Damien will join us too,” Marissa leaped into action, shifting and racing into the trees.

I did the same, my heart pounding loudly.

What was I going to do if something had happened to her?

How would I live with myself?

I tore into the forest, paws thudding on the ground, nose sniffing the air. There was not a single trace of her scent. Nothing that signified she was here, and yet something instinctively made me keep going and moving forward.

Mate, we have to find out, mate! Hurry, Aaron, find her!

We jumped over a stream, rounded shrubs, and every part of me feared I would be too late to save her.

I should have brought her to the meeting with me.

I should have kept her safe. Should have insisted she sit in on the meeting, but she hadn’t wanted to interrupt or distract me.

We’ll find her, Aaron. Stop panicking. Keep calm. She has to be in the territory somewhere. We’ll check the forest and the grounds inch by inch if we have to. I’ve got men already looking. We can’t miss her.

I knew Damien was trying to be reassuring, but I was not comforted in the slightest. The worst scenarios ran through my mind. Had she been set upon by rogues, had she injured herself or gotten trapped somewhere? Had somebody touched her?
