Rejected, Abused, I Fall for the Forbidden Alpha (by Riley Scott) novel Chapter 296

Chapter 296

Asher POV

I felt the sharp sting of pain as his canines sunk into the flesh of my neck, and for a moment I was paralyzed. I barely felt him licking the wound closed, and then, before I could comprehend what was happening, he forced me to bite him back, my reflexes taking over as I closed his wound and completed marking him.

He’d betrayed me.

At least that’s what I felt as I stared at him, a hurt expression on my face.

Maybe I was falling for him; maybe I even had started to fall in love with him, but I had at least thought he would wait until I was ready for this. A mark meant we were tied together, practically husband and wife, and I had hoped to make it special, to make it something memorable.

Not like this.

Not forced against my consent.

He started driving.

I blinked back tears.

“Why?” I finally found my voice. “Why did you do that? I told you I wasn’t ready yet. I thought….” I trailed off and shook my head, bitterness coating my voice. “I thought you were different, but it turns out I was wrong.”

He clenched his jaw, staring fixatedly at the road.

“I am different,” there was a tinge of hopelessness in his voice, “but without the mark, I can’t sense what’s happening to you. I can’t sense if you’re in danger, if you’re hurt. I almost lost you Asher,” his voice rose as he justified himself to me, “I can’t bear to go through that again. What if next time you die? Do you think I could live with myself if that happened?”

I touched my neck, looking at him properly, my eyes still shimmering with tears.

“Then why didn’t you talk to me? Why didn’t you tell me what you were thinking? You just sprung this on me without consideration for my feelings.”

He flinched.

“I know,” he exhaled, “and you have no idea how much I feel like a right asshole for doing this. To be honest though,” he paused, “I’m not sorry. I won’t apologize for trying to protect the woman I’m in love with. Hate me, scream at me,” he continued as I blinked at him, “do what you have to but I’m not going to let you walk back into that packhouse without some form of protection. If this is the only way to keep you safe, then so be it.”
