I did not object. I merely wrapped my arms around him, my grip tightening.

“Whatever you do, don’t drop me,” Lrasped and then wrinkled my nose, “I smell.”

He laughed.

“You do,” he said not unkindly, “but only because you’ve been working hard. I didn’t expect Marissa to be quite so….hard on you.”

“She’s a monster,” I whispered. “She’s going to train me for at least two months.” I grabbed his shirt. “Do something, Aaron. I might not survive that long,” I wailed dramatically and heard him laugh out loud.

“If she was hard on you, it’s because she saw potential,” he assured me, and my eyes narrowed at him.

“Marissa used to be…” he sighed, “well, not as disciplined or as strong as she is now. It took a lot of training for her to get where she is, and Damien spent every waking minute he had helping her. She probably sees a lot of herself in you. She’s not the type to waste her time on someone if she doesn’t see any benefit to it. Trust me, Asher, she’s doing this because she wants you to get stronger.”

I frowned at him.

He just smiled and kissed me on the forehead.

My stomach growled loudly.

He chuckled, and within minutes, I’d showered, changed, and was devouring food at the dining table like somebody who had been starved for days.

Training that intense will do that to you.

Aaron just grinned and ate slowly. Marissa joined us, scoffing her food down while Damien looked at her, amused.

“Anybody would think I had denied you food,” he laughed.

Marissa glared at him.

He shut his mouth.

“Some wine for you, Asher,” Candice smiled brightly at me and filled my glass as I barely acknowledged her.

She went to step away, and I stilled.

“Get her girls.”

The voice echoed inside my mind. Familiar, distant, and penetrating the edge of my consciousness.

Candice’s voice.

I would know it anywhere.

I studied her closely.

“It was you,” I said quietly, and she blinked at me, still holding the bottle of wine and eyeing me, confused.

“What was?”

I stood up slowly, tilting my head.
