Rejected, Abused, I Fall for the Forbidden Alpha (by Riley Scott) novel Chapter 53

Chapter 53

“I know you didn’t just coincidentally come across us,” I spat, “who sent you?”

He tries to shake his head. “No one,”

I don’t believe him. His tone is too hesitant, and he’s avoiding my eyes. I cut him slightly, and he gasps. My knee digs into his groin.

“Who sent you?” I sing.

He gulps. “Fine, I’ll tell you. Somebody paid us to follow you and attack when it was most convenient. I don’t know who. All I know is that my leader gave us this assignment and warned us not to get caught. We were supposed to kill the girl with black hair called Raven after having fun with her and take out anybody else with her.”

“So, your target was me?” My voice is icy.

“You’re the only black-haired girl here named Raven,” he coughed, “the others were distracting the wolves so I could get to you. I swear I don’t know anything else.”

“How did you know we were leaving the pack house?”

“We’ve been holed just outside the territory for hours. We were just told the pack you were staying, what you looked like, and that if you left, to follow and find a way to kill you. We got paid handsomely for it. That’s everything I know.”

“When did you get contacted?”

“Last night,” he hesitated, “I think. We left in the early hours of this morning to lie in wait.”

My mother must have felt more threatened by me than I realized, or Marissa had planned this. Had mother noticed the spell not working? Or was Marissa trying to get rid of the one obstacle in her path preventing her from marrying Hades? I shook my head and then pressed the knife down harder.
