We giggled together. “Still, it would be nice to know more about you. It almost feels like you have some sort of dramatic tale to tell,” she added, eyeing me with intense curiosity as I tried not to squirm. “But I also know you probably have your reasons for keeping quiet. I get it.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that,” I told her honestly.

I knew it must be killing her to be kept in the dark, but for now, it couldn’t be helped. Maybe later, I would divulge my identity when it was safe to do so and when I trusted her implicitly.

She was so generous and kind. I wished I could divulge my identity, but it wasn’t possible yet. Aeress rose to her feet. “I hope you don’t mind, but I agreed to a meeting with Damien Shadow. You can come or stay, but he sounded quite desperate on the phone.”

She looked at me expectantly, arching a brow as she waited for my answer.

I hesitated. I barely knew Damien Shadow. Why was he so concerned about my past? Why did I feel fear overtaking me? He was nice, kind. Nothing had indicated he was capable of violence without good reason. So why did I feel like this visit could change my life forever? Why did I feel like there was something pivotal he wanted to discuss? It couldn’t be marriage, could it? I wasn’t ready for that type of commitment, and as lovely as Damien Shadow was, I had no interest in him whatsoever. Hades was my main priority and my main focus. I wasn’t about to give up on my revenge. Still, I was intrigued, wondering what could possibly be so important he required our presence.

“I’ll come, but if I want to leave…” I began, refusing to be cornered or trapped.

“We’ll leave,” Aeress assured me, “he sounded quite frazzled on the phone, which is unusual for him. Maybe he needs our help with something,” she said thoughtfully.

“A grown man, needing our help?” I scoffed, “Pull the other one Aeress.”
