By the time Sophia got back to Jenston and rushed to the hospital, it was already 5 PM the next day.

May had texted Sophia first thing that morning, letting her know Irene had pulled through the worst of it, but she was still stuck in the ICU.

Sophia hurried into the hospital and spotted Easton slumped on a bench outside the room, looking completely

worn out.

She had never seen him look so haggard before, and she couldn’t help but feel a pang in her chest for him. She grabbed two bottles from the vending machine and handed one to Easton. She said, “Drink some water.”

Easton slowly lifted his head, his eyes rimmed red with exhaustion. She took the bottle from Sophia and said, ‘ Thanks.”

Sophia sat down beside him and asked, “How’s Irene holding up?”

Easton took a sip and said, “The Doctor said she landed hard on the back of her head when she fell. They did surgery to clear out the bleeding, but she’s still in critical condition.”

Sophia stayed by his side in silence, unsure what comfort she could offer, quietly waiting for the doctor to

emerge.

Whether it was her exhausting trip back or that her illness hadn’t cleared up yet, Sophia felt dizzy and lightheaded. She leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and tried to catch her breath.

Soon enough, everything started to go blurry for her; her eyelids got heavier and heavier, and before she knew it, her whole body instinctively leaned on Easton for support.

Easton reached out, pulling her gently into his arms, and his nose accidentally brushed against her forehead. He asked, “Sophia, do you have a fever?”

Seeing she didn’t respond, Easton placed his hand on her forehead and realized she was burning up. He gently lifted Sophia into his arms, cradling her just as the doctor emerged from the ICU.

Still holding Sophia, Easton hurried up to the doctor and asked, “How’s my grandma doing?”

The doctor removed his mask and said, “Don’t worry, Mr. Foster. Your grandma’s pulled through the worst. We’ Il get her settled in a normal room soon.”

A wave of relief washed over Easton. He quickly asked if the doctor could arrange another room for Sophia to

rest.

After a careful examination, the doctor explained that Sophia’s recurring fever and cough were due to a bacterial infection. He put her on an IV drip and gave her a shot to help bring her temperature down.

Sophia woke up in a hospital bed, feeling out of it.

May was sitting right beside the bed. As soon as she noticed Sophia coming around, she hurried to help Sophia sit up.

Sophia asked, “How did I end up here?”

May explained, “Easton called me right away when you passed out with a fever. He made sure you had a room to stay in. Once your fever broke, he went over to the next room to check on Irene.”

When Sophia heard that Irene was just in the room next door, she instinctively started to get out of bed, worry etched all over her face as she desperately wanted to check on Irene.

May stopped her and said, “You’re still on an IV drip, Sophia. Hold on, no need to rush. The doctor said Irene has made it through the dangerous part, but she’s not awake yet. You can go to see her a little later-there’s still time.”

Sophia nodded and said, “Okay.”

By the time it was past midnight, Sophia had finished her IV drip and was feeling much better.

May, who had to be in court early the next morning, made sure Sophia was stable before heading out. Sophia wrapped herself in her coat and quietly walked over to the next room.

Seeing Irene hooked up to so many tubes, Sophia’s heart ached, and her tears spilled out before she could stop them. She walked over to the bed and took Irene’s hand. She said, “Irene, I came to see you. Can you hear me?”

Watching Irene lying there without any reaction, Sophia felt a deep sadness wash over her.
