139.Chapter 139
Sophia sat with Irene for a while, but seeing there was still no sign Irene would wake up, she got up to leave- only to realize Easton was already standing in the doorway.
Easton came over and gently wiped the tears from her eyes. He comforted her, ‘Don’t be sad. Grandma will come back to us.”
Sophia nodded and replied, “Yeah, I know.”
Easton gently pulled Sophia into his arms, holding her close.
After regaining her composure, Sophia gently pulled back from his embrace. She asked, ‘Did you ask someone to look into what happened to Irene?”
Easton’s face clouded over. He said, “I’ve already had people pull the security footage, but we haven’t found anyone suspicious yet.”
Sophia went quiet for a moment before saying, “Easton, I just don’t believe Irene would fall for no reason.”
Easton frowned deeply and said, “Yeah, I get it. I’ll keep pushing the investigation. Grandma’s stable for now, and once she wakes up, we’ll know exactly what went down.”
Noticing the worry in Sophia’s eyes, Easton added, “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure people are taking good care of Grandma these next few days. She’ll wake up soon, I promise.”
Sophia nodded and said, “Okay.”
The next morning, Sophia asked Emily to take care of the discharge papers. Before heading out, she swung by the next room to see how Irene was doing.
Grace nearly burst into tears the moment she saw Sophia. She said, “Mrs. Sophia Foster, it’s all my fault if I hadn’t left Mrs. Irene Foster alone, none of this would’ve happened.”
Sophia comforted her, “Grace, these things just happen sometimes. We didn’t all want this. If someone really tried to hurt Irene, they would’ve found a way no matter what. Don’t beat yourself up over it.”
Grace was crushed, her sadness written all over her face.
Sophia asked a few quick questions, then left the room with Emily.
“Sophia, what do you think about Irene’s accident?” Emily asked.
Sophia buckled up, her face set and determined. She said, “I’m not letting this go-I get to the truth. Didn’t you say a friend from your orphanage just passed her nursing exam?”
Emily nodded, keeping her eyes on the road. She said, “Yeah, she’s still job hunting.”
Sophia said, “I’ll arrange for her to work at the nursing home. While she’s on the job, I have her discreetly keep tabs on what’s going on there.”
Emily instantly understood what Sophia was getting at. She replied, “Alright, I’ll explain everything to her.”
Once they got back to Crestview Group, Sophia dove right back into her work.
When Julian heard Sophia was back, he knocked on her office door and walked in. He asked, “You just got back from Japoria yesterday, then hurried straight to the hospital. Why don’t you take a break at home today?”
Sophia kept quiet about last night’s fever-she didn’t want to make Julian worry.
She replied, “I’m really fine. The final round for the southern development project bid is the day after tomorrow and I’ve still got a mountain of work to catch up on. I don’t want to waste any time.*
Julian knew he couldn’t change her mind, so after a few gentle reminders, he turned and left the office.
Sophia grabbed the proposal and started rewriting it, following the notes May had made.
Before leaving for the day, Sophia reread the proposal countless times, yet it still felt off. Whether it was restlessness or something deeper gnawing at her, she couldn’t shake her unease.

Sophia leaned back in her office chair, pinched the bridge of her nose, and took a moment to steady her thoughts. Forcing herself to calm down, she dove right back into rewriting it from scratch.
At Foster Group, Easton had just finished a video conference. He picked up his phone and pulled up the photo Gordon had sent him of Evan. Zooming in, he suddenly spotted something he hadn’t noticed before: the bracelet on Evan’s wrist.
