She took a deep breath, her voice edged with annoyance. “Mr. Foster, what do you think you’re doing?”

When he saw Sophia get angry actually made the strange heaviness in Easton’s heart lighten a bit. “That day at the hospital was pretty chaotic, and about the kid?”

“Mr. Foster, if this isn’t about work, then I don’t think we need to keep talking. Sophia cut him off, her tone icy.

She had no clue what he was trying to say, but she’d already decided: unless it was about work, there was nothing personal left between them. So she cut him off without a second thought.

That’s enough, Easton. Whatever’s going on with you is your own business. I don’t want to hear it, and I don’t care to know. We’re strictly business now, so you really don’t need to explain yourself to me.

Easton could see that Sophia was truly upset. As he watched her walk away, a deep sense of powerlessness settled over him; he suddenly felt like there was nothing he could do at all.

Once Sophia got in the car, Emily shot her a quick, worried glance. ‘Sophia, are you okay?”

I’m fine. Just drive,’ Sophia replied, her voice steady.

On the surface, Sophia seemed composed, but her thoughts were all over the place. She felt so helpless; every single time, Easton could mess with her emotions without even trying.

But honestly, she just couldn’t help how she felt.

She could put on a show for everyone else, but her own heart was the one thing she could never deceive.

She’d given it her all, but when it came to Easton, she was still no match.

Sophia quickly pulled out her tablet and threw herself into work. Only work could quiet the storm in her heart. Julian had taken Annie back to Harlinton for a week, and they’d just returned to Jenston today.

When Sophia got back to Crestview Group that afternoon, she had just settled in when a knock sounded at her office door.

‘Come in,’ she said, not looking up.

Without glancing up, she continued organizing her documents.

“Ms. Roth, you’re so busy, teased a familiar voice from the doorway.

Sophia looked up in surprise and saw Annie standing there, beaming with happiness.

“Annie, you’re back already?” Sophia called out, her face lighting up.

She got up with a big smile and walked over to Annie, pulling her into a warm hug

“Yeah, we got in around noon. I told Julian I hadn’t seen you in forever, and since he’s got a whole week’s

worth of work to catch up on, I didn’t want him wasting time driving me home.

“So I just came to the office with him instead, Annie said, smiling.

Sophia hooked her arm through Annie’s and joked, ‘Missing me is just your cover story. You’re really here because you’re worried Julian’s overworking himself.”

Annie playfully tapped Sophia’s nose. “You just love teasing me.”

Sophia smiled warmly.

Annie stayed in Sophia’s office, keeping her company as she worked.

Sophia let out a sigh. “It’s such a pity, you know? If two people are really in love but their families are dead set against it, that’s just heartbreaking.”

Annie nodded. “Seriously, I never expected Charles, the classic playboy, to actually take on his whole family for Fiona. I gotta say, I see him in a whole new light after this.”

Sophia went quiet, her thoughts swirling. ‘Is it possible that Easton never married Stella all these years because of Irene?’ she wondered.
