When she walked into the private room, Minnie poured her a drink. “Stella, what’s the rush? What’s so urgent that you had to call me out here?”

Stella took a sip of her drink, her face clouded with concern. “I suspect Sophia was already pregnant when she split with Easton.”

Minnie paused, her glass halfway to her lips, looking genuinely surprised. “Why would you suddenly suspect that?”

Stella set her glass down. “I just went to pick up David from kindergarten, and I saw Sophia there to pick up her child. From my car, I heard that kid call her ‘Mommy!

“I asked the teacher and David, and it turns out the boy’s name is Lucas, and he’s in the same class as David. The thing is, he’s about the same age as David. That’s why I suspect he might actually be Sophia and Easton’s son.”

Minnie caught the key point. “Wait, you said that kid is about the same age as David, but his last name is Roth?” Stella nodded. “Yeah, that’s right.”

“His age and last name don’t really prove anything. But Sophia was crazy about Easton back then. I just can’t see her moving on that fast and having a kid with someone else right after the divorce,” Minnie said.

Minnie got a point. Sophia could never get over Easton quickly and have a baby with another guy.

She grabbed Minnie’s hand. “We need to get someone to run a DNA test on that kid and Easton.

“If they really are father and son, I have to make sure they never find out the truth. There’s no way I’m letting Sophia use that kid as an excuse to worm her way back into Easton’s life.”

Minnie nodded, then texted Tim, asking him to try to get something Easton had used, a strand of hair or a cup he had drunk from.

The next day, Stella went to the kindergarten and slipped Noreen some cash, asking her to quietly pluck a few hairs from Lucas.

Noreen thought, ‘It’s just a couple of hairs, and I can get thirty thousand for it. Easy money. No reason to say no.’ She agreed without hesitation.

When school let out, Sophia came to pick up Lucas. The whole way home, Lucas was pouting, his cheeks puffed out in a sulk.

Seeing how upset he looked, Sophia asked gently, “Lucas, what’s wrong? Why the long face?”

Lucas pouted even more. “Mommy, Ms. Hopper pulled out a few strands of my hair for no reason today. It really hurt.”

Sophia looked confused. “Why would Ms. Hopper pull out your hair?”

Lucas shook his head. “I don’t know. But I saw her secretly put the strands in a small bag and slip them into David’s backpack. David’s mom picked him up at lunchtime.”

Sophia was so shocked that she almost ran a red light. She slammed on the brakes and whipped her head around, her voice urgent. “You’re saying Ms. Hopper put your hair in David’s backpack?”

Lucas nodded.

What Sophia had been dreading had finally happened. But there was no time to think about how Stella found out about Lucas, or why Noreen was taking orders from Stella.
