May huffed, “Honestly, ex-husbands should just stay dead and buried, but that jerk Easton keeps pulling his ridiculous stunts and showing up in your life like some zombie. Just thinking about it makes me mad.

“So if you can’t get over him, I totally get it.”

Sophia couldn’t help but laugh at May’s words.

“Can you not make it sound so dramatic?” Sophia said, her smile fading. “I’m not going to lie to myself. I really can’t forget

him.

“Thirteen years, if I said I didn’t love him, you wouldn’t buy it. But I’m not about to throw myself at misery. Whatever’s going on between him and Stella, it’s not our place to judge.”

“Besides, Foster Group and Crestview Group are working together now, so I’ll be seeing him a lot. Seriously, don’t worry about me, I’m fine.

“Let’s just get through these next couple of days. Before the New Year, I’m heading back to Japoria to spend it with Lucas,” Sophia added.

“Alright,” May replied.

May felt a weight lift off her shoulders seeing Sophia be so honest. At least she wasn’t keeping it all inside and hurting alone.

Work went smoothly after that. May patted her chest and swore she’d get the contract done before the holiday.

After May left at seven, the office was suddenly quiet. The steady ticking of the wall clock was all that remained.

Tick-tock, tick-tock…

Sophia felt heaviness settle in her chest.

She put on her coat, wrapped a scarf around her neck, and as she stepped out of the Crestview Group building, she noticed it was snowing outside.

She didn’t take an umbrella or drive her car. Instead, she strolled down the street, aimlessly walking in the falling snow.

Her emotions were a tangled mess, impossible to unravel, impossible to cut loose. That pretty much summed up how she felt right now.

She had no idea how long she’d been walking, but when she couldn’t take another step, she ordered a ride on her phone.

She rolled down the window and let the cold wind blow in, and bit by bit, the heaviness in her heart seemed to ease.

Fifteen minutes later, Sophia arrived at Grandview Estate.

When the elevator doors slid open, she spotted a tall figure leaning casually by her front door, Easton. Their eyes locked out of nowhere, and her chest tightened painfully.

Easton’s lips curled into a faint smile as he closed the distance between them in a few easy steps.

Sophia snapped out of it, sidestepped him, and headed straight for her door.

“I’m back. Aren’t you supposed to have something to ask me?” Easton said, with a teasing, almost-smiling look.

Sophia was icy calm, her thoughts razor-sharp as she turned to face him. “Easton, since you’re already with Stella, you shouldn’t be coming to me for anything outside of work. You moved in next door. Let’s be real, it’s because you want me

back.

“It’s been five years, and I never imagined my body would still have such a hold on you. Is Stella not enough for you, or do you just get off on the thrill of sneaking around?

“But sorry, I’m not signing up to be anyone’s side chick,” Sophia said.

With that, she unlocked her door with her fingerprint.

Easton stepped forward and grabbed her wrist. “Sophia, from start to finish, there’s nothing but innocence between me and Stella. How many times do I have to say it for you to finally believe me?” he said, frustration clear in his voice.

Sophia jerked her hand free, a cold smirk on her face. “Mr. Foster, I bet you haven’t even gotten off Ms. Weston for a full twenty-four hours yet, have you?” she shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
