Sophia’s eyes sparkled with inspiration, and she spent the next hour capturing his image on paper.

She picked up her sketchpad, ready to leave, but as she passed behind him, on a whim, she found herself wanting to get closer.
And that’s how, after months of silence, Sophia finally found herself reaching out to someone first.
Easton furrowed his brows, clearly not interested in responding to the girl next to him.
But she just kept chattering away, like she’d spent her whole life in silence and was finally making up for it.
“Enough. I don’t even know you. Can you just leave? I want to be alone,” Easton snapped, his voice cold.
Sophia ignored his attempt to shoo her away. “I’m all alone here at the rehab center. My family doesn’t want me anymore. Can’t you just take pity on me and keep me company?”
Easton could relate all too well. His father had died when he was young, and even though his mother took him to live with his grandparents, he’d never once felt her love.
To him, it was no different from being abandoned by his own family.
Seeing that he didn’t say anything else, Sophia kept talking. She hadn’t expected that a small fib would actually soften him up, but it worked. He didn’t try to chase her away again.
In the days that followed, Sophia kept hanging around Easton, just like she did that first day. She’d chat about her favorite manga stories and the latest movies on TV, and that cold, aloof boy would occasionally join in the conversation. Gradually, they became more familiar with each other, but neither ever told the other their names.
Maybe Sophia thought their connection was just a chance meeting, just leaning on each other for a little comfort in this cold rehab center.
Since she never asked, Easton didn’t volunteer it either.
Then, one day, during his last appointment, the doctor told Easton they’d finally found a suitable donor cornea. His surgery was scheduled for the very next day.
Easton was thrilled. He asked the caregiver to take him out to the big lawn, waiting for the little girl who’d been by his side for half a year.
He waited and waited until she finally came running over, a little out of breath. “I’m getting discharged today. My family’s car is already out front. Thank you for being there for me these past few months.”
Easton should have been happy for her, but the thought of never hearing her voice again left a hollow ache in his chest.
And he still had no idea what she looked like.
Suddenly, Easton reached out and took her hand, his heart pounding. “Do you remember that movie you told me about?” he asked.
Sophia blinked, a little lost, racking her brain to figure out which one he was’talking about.
Easton reminded her, “The one you love the most, ‘When We Grow Up, I’ll Marry You.”
Sophia froze for a moment, caught off guard.
“Do you believe in fate?” Easton asked.
Sophia nodded. “I do.”
Easton’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Then wait for me. I’ll come find you, and one day, I’ll marry you. Deal?”
Sophia looked up at him, her eyes bright and clear. “Are you for real?”
Easton thought she was just a kid, probably still innocent when it came to love. Honestly, he wasn’t much better himself, but he knew for sure that he liked her.
He kept daydreaming about how perfect their reunion would be one day, so he didn’t bother looking her up or asking around.
Everything else could wait until his eyes were healed.
Not long after, Easton was lying there drunk, full of regret.
He thought, ‘If I’d known fate would play such cruel tricks on me, I would’ve asked Sophia for her name the moment she left the rehab center. Maybe we wouldn’t be struggling so much now, he thought bitterly.
