It wasn’t just the socialites in the room or Frank up on stage who noticed Sophia walk in. Not even Easton, sitting in his private room upstairs, caught it right away.
But even Alex, standing quietly in a corner below the stage, couldn’t help but notice her arrival.
Alex lifted his glass for a sip, and his assistant spoke up in a calm, measured tone. “Mr. Weston, that’s Sophia, the legendary top socialite in Jenston, and the vice president of Crestview Group.”
He flashed a wicked grin. “She really lives up to the hype. She’s gorgeous.”
Then he set his glass down. “Too bad. No matter how stunning she is, I’m not interested in someone else’s woman. Besides, she’s the Weston family’s sworn enemy.”
“But that woman standing next to her? Now she’s got my attention,” Alex said with a sly grin.
The assistant followed his gaze and explained, “That’s Ms. Roth’s friend, May Young. She’s one of the partners at Brightway Law Firm in Jenston.”
Alex’s lips curled into a smirk. “Oh, a lawyer. A professional. She’s beautiful, and even her name sounds nice.”
“May’s got a reputation as a real firecracker in our circle,” the assistant said. “She’s fiercely loyal and never hesitates to fight for justice, but honestly, not many people can handle her.”
The assistant reported everything he’d found.
Alex turned and headed back to his seat. “A rose with thorns? I like that. Find a way to set up a meeting with her for me.” “Yes, Mr. Weston,” the assistant replied.
After Jackson wrapped up his speech, the whole place buzzed with energy. Frank stuck close to his dad, schmoozing with the big shots and key partners all night, but he just couldn’t find a moment to break away and talk to Sophia.
Meanwhile, Sophia and May found themselves a quiet corner to sit in. Ryan, with his assistant in tow, pretended to casually bump into them and came over to greet them.
As soon as May saw him, she looked like she’d seen a ghost and immediately tried to avoid him.
“Sophia, I just spotted a few clients I know over there. I’ll go say hi and come back to keep you company,” May said, quickly making her escape.
Sophia thought to herself, ‘Why is May acting just like me? Ugh, we’re both so hopeless.’
She gave a helpless smile. “Go ahead, I’ll wait here.”
Seeing May practically bolt, Ryan figured his wingman duties for a friend were halfway done. He made small talk with Sophia for a bit, then excused himself and left.
Sophia sat by herself, quietly sipping on her juice. Out in the suburbs, where the Hayes Group was celebrating its anniversary, they were about to kick off the fireworks show.
Curious, she stood up and wandered over to the balcony, completely absorbed by the dazzling fireworks bursting across the night sky.
Easton showed up behind her so quietly she hadn’t even noticed, his voice smooth and deep. “You like fireworks that much?” Sophia startled at the sudden voice, and as she spun around, she wobbled in her heels and nearly twisted her ankle.
Easton reacted instantly, his arm snaking around her waist to steady her.
But in the process, he “accidentally” spilled a little red wine on Sophia’s dress.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” he said.
Sophia pressed her hands against his chest, her tone a little reproachful. “You just love sneaking up on me, don’t you?” Easton chuckled softly, his laughter rumbling in his chest.
She realized his hand was still on her waist. Once she regained her balance, she gently nudged his hand away, making sure to keep some space between them.
Easton eyed the wine stain on her robe, his tone all busineee “looks like I messed up your dress. Let me have Gordon get you a fresh one.”
