Before leaving, Sophia had already sent Ryan a list of questions she wanted to ask and even put together a detailed report

for him about the local area.

Ryan sat in his office, going through each of Sophia’s questions with care. He even made helpful adjustments to the documents. Once he was done, he called her immediately.

“Ms. Roth, are you busy?” Ryan asked. The call connected, but there was no response from the other end. Ryan tried again,” Ms. Roth, can you hear me?”

Sophia was clutching her map and tablet, scouting out the area. The wind was wild, and the signal kept dropping. “Mr. Howard, I hear you. Bad connection, sorry. Just got to Redrock City today, and the signal’s pretty spotty here.”

Sophia moved over to a spot with better reception and kept talking to Ryan. Paolo gestured to her, letting her know he’d be taking pictures over there. She gave him a quick nod while still on the phone.

When they just got here, Sophia thought, ‘Redrock City’s weather has been awful lately, nothing but wind and rain. I’d checked the forecast before coming. Noon seemed like the best bet, and it is. How nice.’

The skies cleared, and the sun was out. No rain, and nothing seemed to get in the way of Sophia’s survey or photos today.

While Sophia was on the phone with Ryan, a thunderclap suddenly crashed overhead, so loud it made her drop the phone in shock. She picked it up, but the call had already disconnected.

She quickly texted Ryan: [Sorry, Mr. Howard. Looks like a huge storm’s about to hit, and the thunder keeps crashing down. I’ d better not risk another call. Let’s catch up when I’m back and go over the details then.]

Ryan replied: [Alright, stay safe over there. If you need anything, just let me know.]

Sophia stashed her phone away after reading his reply. Just seconds later, the rain started pouring down. She quickly grabbed her map and tablet, snatched her bag, and threw it over her shoulder.

“Paolo, it’s pouring! Let’s head out and come back tomorrow,” she shouted.

Paolo nodded from afar and began to run, but before he could reach Sophia, three men suddenly appeared out of nowhere, lunging at her with knives, trying to grab her. Paolo shouted, “Ms. Roth, watch out!”

Sophia reacted in a flash. She slung off her bag and threw it straight at those men, then bolted.

The rain was coming down in sheets, and the mountain path was rough and slippery. Sophia ran as fast as she could, while Paolo stayed behind to block the attackers.

There were too many of them, and it was obvious that these guys were pros. Paolo was already taking hits. “Ms. Roth, don’t worry about me. Just run. Get somewhere safe and call the police,” Paolo shouted.

Sophia’s heart was pounding with worry for Paolo, but if she didn’t run, she’d only slow him down. She could hear footsteps closing behind her, so she sprinted as fast as she could.

After a while, she realized she was totally lost. The rain was pouring down, and she had no clue if Paolo was okay or not. Her phone was gone, probably lost when she bolted in panic.

Sophia glanced around, only to see rocky hills. The men were still chasing her, driving her into a corner. The rain was coming down in torrents, and the muddy ground beneath her feet was starting to slide.

Sophia’s heart pounded. ‘What if a landslide hit and buried me alive?’

At that moment, one of the men caught up, his expression menacing. “Why did you stop?” he taunted.
