Sophia was terrified as the man approached. She snatched up a few stones from the ground and hurled them at him. “Who are you? Why are you trying to capture me?”

The man let out a cold laugh. “With death staring you in the face, why do you care so much?”

He stepped forward, and Sophia instinctively retreated, her back nearing the edge. One more step and she’d plunge into the dense jungle below. Even if she survived, she’d be crippled for life.

Sophia stared at the man in front of her, her mind blank. The nightmare she’d feared was suddenly real. Heavy rain had weakened the ground, and the earth began to crumble, unleashing a mudslide that swept them away.

Sophia was thrown toward the cliff’s edge. Her body froze as her lower back slammed into something hard. Twisting around, her eyes landed on a thick tree trunk.

Using every bit of strength, she clung to the tree. The mudslide’s force was brutal, and there was no way she could hold out for long. Just seconds later, the current tore her away once more.

A cold dread gripped Sophia’s heart. The faces of her child, Uncle Edward, and all the others she loved flashed before her.’ This is it. I’m going to die here. I’ll never see any of them again.’

As the mudslide carried her, panic clawed at Sophia’s throat, but her mind remained shockingly clear. ‘I can’t just wait for death. I need a plan.’ Her eyes tracked the path of the mudslide and locked onto a huge rock ahead.

‘Buried here or washed away, either way it’s dangerous. If the mud takes me, I’m gone. That rock is my only chance. I have to risk it, Sophia thought.

Having made up her mind, Sophia braced herself, ready to hit the rock. The mudslide was so fast, she barely had time to react before slamming into the rock.

She grabbed the edge with both hands, pushing off the swirling mud beneath her. She managed to haul herself up onto the rock, every muscle screaming in protest.

Sophia fought to steady herself on the rock. Her heart pounded with panic as she watched the torrent snatch her shoes away. Once she finally found her footing, she let out a shaky breath.

She temporarily dodged a bullet, but now she faced a whole new problem. She was stranded on a rock, battered by the raging wind and pouring rain.

‘I won’t last long out here. What can I possibly do now?’ Sophia thought, panic clawing at her chest.

Easton had barely stepped off the plane when his phone rang. It was Ryan.

“Mr. Foster, something might’ve happened to Sophia. She went to Redrock City today for a new project. We were on the phone half an hour ago, but then the thunderstorm hit and we had to hang up in a hurry.

“Not long after, the news reported a major mudslide in Redrock City, right where she was. I’ve called her several times, but her phone is unreachable,” Ryan said, his voice tight with worry.

Easton was just out of the airport when Ryan’s words hit him like a truck. He stopped dead in his tracks, his face paling.” You mean you haven’t been able to reach Sophia?” Easton said.

“Yes, Mr. Foster. I immediately told Gordon to prep the helicopter and sent Sophia’s location to him. You need to get over there at once. I’ve also got the medical and fire crews standing by, just waiting for your orders.”

Easton was in shock, his heart racing as his mind spun with one horrifying possibility after another.
