“Got it,” Easton replied. He hung up in a hurry and headed straight for the helipad. He hadn’t gone far when Gordon called, but he didn’t waste a second; he just sprinted toward the helicopter.

Once he was on board, Easton sat back with his eyes closed, his face a mask of stone. His hands were clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white, and every muscle in his body wound up tight.

‘Sophia, please be okay. I have so much to say to you, Easton thought, his heart aching with worry.

The helicopter reached the mudslide zone in no time. Easton peered down. The mud was tearing through the valley, moving so fast that it looked absolutely unstoppable, its force devastating.

With the rain still pouring down in sheets, it looked like this nightmare was nowhere near over. With every passing second, Easton’s anxiety just kept ramping up.

Easton ordered the pilot to push forward, eyes glued to his binoculars as he scanned every inch of the ground below, desperate not to miss even the faintest trace of Sophia.

Darkness was falling fast. It would be too late if they didn’t find her soon.

Easton kept searching for what felt like forever. Finally, he spotted a small figure on a huge rock upstream. “Closer, move us forward a bit,” Easton ordered urgently.

As the helicopter drew nearer, Easton’s heart skipped a beat. It really was Sophia, but she looked unconscious, lying still on the rock.

Easton quickly strapped himself in and told the pilot to lower the rescue ladder.

“Mr. Foster, the mudslide is moving extremely fast. It’s too dangerous for you to go down,” the pilot said to Easton.

Easton cut him off, voice cold and commanding. “Just do it. Stop wasting time.”

“But Mr. Foster…

“Just do it. Now!”

Easton gripped the rescue ladder as it was lowered, rain and wind lashing at him.

The ladder swung dangerously. If he couldn’t land on the rock, the raging mudslide would swallow him whole. That was exactly what the pilot had been worried about.

Yet, Easton ignored all the warnings. Right now, all he could think about was getting to Sophia as fast as possible. Easton fought his way through until he finally reached Sophia. He scooped her up, gently resting his chin against her forehead, and quickly pulled off his jacket to wrap her up tightly.

Holding her even closer, he clung to her as if afraid she’d slip away again. The relief of finding her alive after fearing the worst was indescribable.

“Sophia, I’m here. Open your eyes and look at me,” he called softly. But he couldn’t seem to wake her up.

Easton cradled Sophia in his arms, his gaze sweeping over the battered landscape. He could hardly believe she had managed to survive such hell,

Her face was streaked with cuts, her shoes were gone, and she was deathly pale. Easton’s eyes brimmed with pain and tenderness, and his heart ached for her.

The rain was pouring even harder now, and the mudslide beneath was raging out of control. Easton quickly strapped his own safety harness onto Sophia, scooped her up, and headed for the rescue ladder.

Easton held Sophia tightly in one arm and gripped the ladder with the other. He’d barely climbed a few rungs when the wind whipped them back and forth, making it almost impossible to keep the grip as they dangled dangerously.

Easton clung to Sophia with all his strength, afraid she’d fall into the raging mudslide below. Just as he tried to climb higher, the rope on the ladder suddenly snapped.

Easton’s heart lurched, but instinct took over. He threw himself beneath Sophia as they crashed back onto the ground, breaking her fall with his own body and taking the full brunt of the impact.

His back and head slammed into the rock first. Even then, his first thoughts were of Sophia’s safety, but in the blink of an eye, darkness swallowed him whole.

in full, mileaked!
