Sophia arrived at Crestview Group Just in time. Emily followed behind her, carrying a stack of documents. “Ms. Roth, I’ve got all the materials ready for today’s meeting.

“Mr. Roth’s assistant came by fifteen minutes ago to let us know we can head over now.””

Sophia walked toward her office. “Alright, I’ll grab a file from my office first. And if you have time, put together

a workflow for Paolo so he can get familiar with things before he officially starts.”

Emily’s expression soured as soon as she heard his name. “Okay.”

Sophia glanced back at her and smiled, “What’s wrong? You don’t seem to like him much.”

Emily pouted, “No, it’s just that guy’s always running his mouth.”

Sophia let out a chuckle, then started telling Emily about Paolo. “Paolo’s had a rough life. He grew up on the streets, an orphan who got snatched away when he was just a kid.

“When he was ten, the guy who took him got into a car crash while trying to sell him off. Paolo got lucky; he survived and finally got his freedom.

“After that, he was on his own, wandering around and scraping by. Honestly, his life was pretty brutal, not something most people could handle.

“It wasn’t until ten years ago, when he met a friend of mine, that he finally got a decent job and a better life. So yeah, he’s a bit rough around the edges and can come off strong sometimes. Just try to be patient with him, okay?”

Emily was taken aback. ‘He might have a smart mouth, but he looks pretty normal and is built solid. You’d never guess he’d been through all that,’ she thought.

Suddenly, Emily felt a mix of curiosity and sympathy for Paolo. ”I always thought I was the unluckiest person around, but turns out someone right next to me has had it even harder, she mused.

Emily said, “Sophia, got it. I’ll make sure to help Paolo out.”

Sophia laughed softly. “Paolo’s older than you, so you don’t need to look after him like some mom. If you suddenly start acting all caring, you’ll probably just freak him out. Just be yourself and show him the ropes at work, and that’s enough.”

Emily felt awkward all over after Sophia said that. She gave an awkward grin and nodded.

Once Sophia had everything ready, she took Emily to the conference room for the meeting.

Today’s meeting was a real marathon, running from nine in the morning all the way to four in the afternoon, with only half an hour for lunch.

Even Sophia, who could usually handle anything, was starting to feel wiped out. She couldn’t figure out what had Julian so wound up today; he seemed hell-bent on reviewing every major project for the entire quarter all

at once.

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Julian asked Sophia to stay behind.

Sophia thought, ‘Perfect, I was planning to talk to him anyway.’

She sat down next to Julian, her face serious. “Julian, you’ve been acting strange lately. Half the agenda today was stuff that isn’t even urgent right now. Even if we need to move forward, there’s no need to rush decisions like this.

“But you brought everything up in one day and want the execs to come up with plans in just three days. That’s so not your usual chill style.”

Julian took off his glasses, rubbed his temples, and gave her a teasing smile. “You’d better get used to how I do things for a while.”

Sophia shot him a suspicious look. “Spill it to there wamething bla geing on?”

He said it in that familiar doting tone.
