Half an hour later, what was supposed to be a private dinner for two turned into a full-blown six-person party.
Charles even brought Fiona along.
Easton looked visibly annoyed, and even Sophia could tell he was upset.
Sophia was worried Easton would get angry. She knew better than anyone that his aura could silence a crowd. Sitting down to dinner with someone who looked that cold would make everyone uncomfortable.
Sophia scooted her chair a little closer to Easton, leaned in, and gently tugged at his sleeve under the table. She whispered, “Don’t be like this.”
Maybe it was because Sophia was sitting so close, or maybe it was the way her soft voice brushed against his ear, but whatever it was, Easton found his irritation melted away in an instant.
He didn’t say a word, but he poured Sophia a glass of yogurt and picked out some food for her. Watching her eat quietly, he suddenly felt a lot better.
Once everyone at the table saw Easton’s face soften, the whole vibe lightened up.
Even though their private dinner got crashed, it was the first time Easton had ever seen Sophia smile so genuinely, chatting and laughing with everyone at the table. He couldn’t help but feel happy.
He thought to himself, ‘If only every day could be like this: just three families hanging out together.
Just as dinner was winding down, Sophia got a call from Emily. Rothea Designs had just announced a last- minute video conference, so she had to head back to the office.
May offered to give Sophia a ride, and Easton and Ryan didn’t have much to say about it. After seeing the two women off, the guys walked side by side toward the parking lot.
Suddenly, Easton felt a wave of dizziness hit him, looking pale and unsteady.
Ryan quickly helped him lean against the car. He asked, “Easton, what’s wrong?”
Easton gave a slight shake of his head, gesturing to talk once they were inside.
Ryan hurried to open the passenger door, helped Easton into the seat, and quickly pulled out his phone to call Gordon and the doctor.
As soon as Gordon got the call, he hurried to Remony Medical Center.
When Easton opened his eyes, he realized he was lying in a hospital bed, with Ryan and Gordon standing nearby, both looking seriously worried.
The doctor and nurse helped him sit up.
The doctor explained, “Mr. Foster, the tumor in your brain seems to be getting bigger, which explains all the dizziness, headaches, and fevers you’ve been having lately. Splashing yourself with cold water might help for a moment, but that’s not really going to fix anything.
“After running several tests, we’ve found that the tumor is slowly pressing toward the visual center in your occipital lobe. If we don’t act soon, either with treatment or surgery, you could go blind at any moment.” Easton had heard this kind of news from doctors so many times that he was almost numb to it. But Ryan and Gordon were a mess, their faces full of worry and panic.
After Gordon and the doctor left, Ryan sat down by the bed, his expression serious. He said, “Easton, we really can’t put this off any longer. We need to get you to Menolia for treatment, and we need to go as soon as possible.”
Easton stayed silent. He knew better than anyone that, whether it was surgery or radiotherapy, the best he could hope for was a fifty-fifty shot. If things went south, he’d lose his sight forever.
Ryan understood exactly what Easton was worried about, but if he didn’t get treated, going blind was a sure thing.
