Easton watched Sophia’s retreating figure, his gaze darkening. Derrick’s words and May’s revelations had suddenly thrown him into deep thought..

His eyes on Stella were like a bottomless, icy pool, radiating a chilling coldness.

Stella’s heart jolted. She was terrified that Easton might start questioning what had happened before because of what May had said.

‘No way. I can’t let him dig up the past, Stella thought.

“Easton, David will be out soon. Will you stay with me and wait for him?” Stella could only use David as a distraction to keep his attention off everything else.

Easton’s voice was icy. He didn’t want to talk to her any further, so he just gave a noncommittal answer.

When Derrick, Sophia, and May got to the parking lot, the cop who grilled Derrick yesterday came rushing over. May spotted him and quickly asked, “Frederic, is there something else you want?”

Frederic and May knew each other. May had worked on several of his cases over the years, so they were on friendly terms. “May, there’s a new witness for Mr. Grant. Her statement and the video she sent proved Mr. Grant wasn’t there when David was kidnapped,” Frederic said.

May broke into a relieved smile upon hearing his words. “That’s awesome, Frederic. Thanks a lot.”

Amid her excitement, Sophia made sure to ask, “Frederic, how did you find the witness?”

Frederic gestured toward the hospital building. “The witness is a doctor here, actually one of David’s attending doctors. She happened to see Mr. Grant and May following us into the hospital while she was on duty today.

“When we were interviewing the child’s guardians, she overheard part of our conversation and approached me herself.” Frederic said quietly, “But I’m not at liberty to share her details. I hope you understand.”

Sophia and May both nodded, sincerely thanking him.

Derrick didn’t really care what they were talking about. It was like he’d known the outcome from the start and who the

witness was.

Just as they were about to get in the car, Sophia noticed a subtle change in Derrick’s eyes. His gaze, which had been lingering on the hospital building behind them, suddenly dimmed.

She caught a flicker of sadness in his eyes. At first, she didn’t think much of it, but then something clicked in her mind. ‘This is Remony Medical Center. Could the witness be Dr. Keats?’ she wondered.

“Let’s go. I need to get back to Crestview Group,” Derrick said calmly.

Sophia had thought about mentioning how Dr. Keats had asked her about Derrick before, but it was clear he already knew who the witness was.

After all, there was still something big they needed to handle today, and time was running out.

When the three returned to Crestview Group, they found Emily and Paolo hustling over stacks of data in the investment department.

The whole team instantly perked up when Derrick walked in and loudly greeted him together, their confidence reignited. May was blown away by the scene. She leaned close to Sophia and whispered, “Sophia, what exactly did Derrick do all those years? These guys worship him like he were a hero.”

Sophia smiled and whispered back, “They’ve been with Derrick for years. He told me they’re just like Paolo, whom he pulled out of refugee camps.

“Derrick gave them a new lease on life and brought them into the finance game. To them, he’s like family and their mentor. No matter what, they’d follow him to hell and back.”
