348.Chapter 348
“Seriously, this is the first time I’ve ever seen him up close.”
“I heard Sophia came back to Jenston last year.”
The socialite in front quickly clamped a hand over her friend’s mouth. “You just got back, you don’t know half of it.
“Don’t go blabbing. Last time, at Julian and Annie’s wedding, someone mouthed off about Sophia. Then, her family packed her off abroad that very day. She still hasn’t come back. Word is, Easton made it happen.”
The woman hurriedly covered her own mouth and whispered, “Seriously? I thought Easton never liked his former wife, Sophia. Why would he go to bat for her?”
The socialites broke off into little clusters, swapping gossip about other high–society dramas.
May didn’t even spare them a glance, while Sophia just kept her eyes on the stage, acting like she couldn’t care less that she was the center of their gossip.
“Thank you all so much for coming and celebrating my mother tonight. We really appreciate your warm wishes,” Mr.
Howard said.
With that, Leon officially kicked off the event.
Just then, Sophia was planning to hang out in the side room for a while before heading out, when a masked woman disguised as a server suddenly lunged at her, clutching a bottle of something and trying to douse her with it.
Easton had been watching Sophia ever since she showed up, and when she was about to leave the main hall, he started
after her.
Spotting someone suddenly rushing at Sophia, he reacted in a flash. He grabbed her and used his body to block the liquid aimed at her.
Sophia was stunned, having no idea what was going on, but she heard Easton let out a muffled cry.
May caught a strong chemical smell and saw Easton clinging to Sophia. She yelled, “Everyone, be careful! Someone’s throwing vitriolic acid!”
Gordon, who had been trailing Easton, spotted the attacker right away. He rushed over to grab her, but she took advantage of the chaos, shoved a few socialites out of the way, and slipped through the crowd.
Easton pulled Sophia close, his voice tight with worry. “Are you hurt?”
Sophia blinked, still stunned. After a moment, she shook her head. “No.”
Julian and Derrick rushed over, both looking panicked.
“Easton, take off your jacket! That’s vitriolic acid!” Derrick yelled.
Julian held Sophia up, while Easton yanked off his jacket as soon as Derrick warned him.
Derrick turned to Gordon beside Easton. “Quick, get a doctor!”
Ryan rushed over, supporting Easton as they hurried up to a room on the second floor. He quickly helped Easton rinse off with cold water, trying to wash away the acid.
“Just leave, I can do it myself,” Easton gritted out, his voice strained with suppressed pain.
Just then, the doctor knocked and came in, with Sophia trailing behind. Seeing Easton lying face down on the bed, his back looking seriously messed up, her eyes welled up with tears.
She didn’t dare say anything, just stood silently not far from him, watching as the doctor tended to his injuries.
Even though Easton had turned his face away, Sophia could still see cold sweat trickling down his forehead and neck, and it was obvious just how much pain he was in.
After the doctor left, Easton and Sophia were alone together in the room.
Easton pushed himself up despite the pain. When he caught sight of Sophia, he paused for a few seconds, then played it cool and reached for a clean shirt, trying to put it on like nothing was wrong.
Noticing he was struggling with his shirt, Sophia stepped up and said, “Let me help you.”
Easton lowered his eyes to Sophia, his voice gentle. “Sophia, I…”
Sophia didn’t let him finish. “Easton, this is where it ends for us. From now on, you’re just Annie’s cousin to me. Nothing
more.”
