Eleanore only found out about all that when she got Paolo to talk on the day Lucas had his surgery.

Eleanore was convinced that Derrick had only broken up with her because her mom had talked to him behind

her back.

“Say something! Why won’t you answer me?” Eleanore stepped up again, demanding an answer.

Derrick didn’t want to get into it with her. He was hoping to settle things and get out of there, but before he could say a word, a familiar voice sounded from behind him.

“Eleanore, why aren’t you coming? Mr. Howard and his family are all here,” the voice called out.

Derrick turned around and locked eyes with Miranda Keats, Eleanore’s mother.

“Why is it you?” Miranda blurted out, clearly surprised. She quickly stepped forward, pulled Eleanore back, and stood protectively in front of her.

Derrick really didn’t want to start any drama in front of everyone, and the last thing he wanted was for Eleanore to dig up more than she should.

He tried to slip past them and make his exit, but Eleanore clung to his arm, refusing to let him go. Her eyes shimmered with tears, ready to fall at any moment.

“Derrick, don’t go,” she begged.

Miranda saw her daughter so heartbroken and felt just as heartbroken herself. But she knew there was no way the two of them could ever be together.

“Come on, Eleanore. Let’s go upstairs. We’re in Jenston, not abroad. Who knows what kind of trouble it’ll cause if a reporter catches us on camera,” she urged.

Eleanore shook off her mom’s hand. “Why are you so scared of reporters? We’re not celebrities, and we’re not some big-shot family either.”

Derrick instinctively glanced toward the hotel entrance, and just as Miranda had mentioned, there were reporters lurking outside, trying to snap photos of them.

He quickly turned around, stepping in front of Eleanore and her mom to shield them. “Let me escort you upstairs,” he offered.

Miranda seemed to sense something was up and nodded in agreement.

Derrick took Eleanore’s hand and made sure her mom was safely inside the elevator with them.

Eleanore didn’t care about anything else, not even her mom standing right there. At that moment, she just threw her arms around Derrick and hugged him tightly.

‘Derrick leaned in, his breath warm against her forehead. “Ellie, listen to your mom and go have dinner upstairs. We’ll talk about us… some other time.”

Eleanore looked up at him, tears shimmering in her eyes. “You’re not lying to me, are you?”

Derrick brushed away the tear from the corner of her eye with the back of his hand, his voice deep and gentle.” I won’t.”

When the elevator doors opened, Derrick led Eleanore out, then glanced back at Miranda. “Trust me. I’ll make sure those photos never see the light of day.”

Eleanore’s mom nodded, her face solemn.

Only after watching Eleanore follow Miranda into the private room did Derrick finally step into the elevator. He pulled out his phone and called Paolo, telling him to hunt down those two reporters at the entrance and make them wipe out every single photo they snapped tonight.

Word absolutely couldn’t get back to the Keats family in Riverdale about Eleanore and her mom showing up in Jenston.

Sophia had just finished giving Lucas a bath and settled him on the bed with a storybook. She was about to head into the bathroom herself when there was a knock at the door.

Sophia opened the door, eyeing Easton warily. “What do you want?”

Easton was holding the sketching set Sophia had bought at the mall that morning. “Gordon went to the insurance company’s repair shop this afternoon to check on your car.

“It’s nothing serious, and he should be able to bring it back to you the day after tomorrow. He found this in your car, thought it was for Lucas, so he brought it over.”

Sophia took the sketchbook from Easton. “Thanks.”

Lucas had quietly gotten out of bed and was standing there, tilting his head as he looked at Easton at the door.

He asked, “Why aren’t you sleeping so late? Are you here to sleep with us?”
