442.Chapter 442
“And in the Foster family, people never talk about her, mostly because of me,” he added.
Sophia noticed a fleeting chill in Easton’s eyes when he mentioned his mom.
Easton said, “When I was three, my mom and dad had a huge fight. She took me and left Jenston for Harlinton, to my grandpa’s place. Three years later, my dad died in a car crash, but my mom refused to let me attend his funeral.
“To be honest, I barely remember him. All I know is, every time he visited, my mom would have a meltdown, and I’d always get the worst of it. She beat me, locked me in the attic for a day and night, leaving me bruised and hungry.
“When my grandparents were alive, they always tried to protect me. But after they passed away, and then my dad died, too, my mom just got meaner. Whenever she was upset, I was her punching bag.”
Sophia was shocked to her core, but Easton just looked calm, as if he were talking about the weather.
“Remember when you asked why I’m such a pro at patching myself up? It’s because every time my mom roughed me up, I had to handle it on my own,” Easton said.
Sophia suddenly stopped in her tracks. “So, it was Annie’s mom, Evelyn, who finally had enough and took you in, raising you with the Hughes family, right?”
Easton nodded. “Yeah.”
Sophia had never known that Easton’s childhood was so rough. So that’s why he was so guarded and distant when they first met at the sanatorium.
Easton said, “After my dad passed, the Foster family was a total mess, problems everywhere, inside and out. Irene was the only one holding the whole Foster Group together, all on her own.
“She didn’t dare bring me back until things finally calmed down. But she never expected that not long after I returned to Jenston, Chloe already had her eyes on me. That accident made me honestly think I would never see the light of day again.”
Sophia looked up at Easton, feeling a sudden urge to ask, ‘Do you still remember the girl from those days at the sanatorium?’
She also wanted to blurt out, ‘Did you forget the promise you made to me back then? Was it because you met Stella afterwards?’
Sophia lowered her eyes, thinking, ‘Does it even matter now?
‘So many years have passed. If Easton says he’s forgotten or that he’s moved on, wouldn’t that just make me feel even more embarrassed?’
Suddenly, Easton put his hand on Sophia’s shoulder. “Sophia, I’m not telling you all this about my mom because I want your pity. I just want you to understand where I come from.
“I need you to know that growing up the way I did, I keep my guard up with everyone. It’s not easy for anyone to break through.
“But you… You’re the only one who’s ever made it in. Whether it was you back at the sanatorium or you standing here now. Sophia, you’ve never left my heart,” Easton said, grabbing her hand and pressing it to his chest.
Sophia’s eyes flickered with surprise. ‘What does Easton mean by that?’ she wondered.
Easton continued explaining, “Back then, Stella used all those coincidences to mislead me, and I ended up believing she was the girl from back then. Sophia, I’m really sorry. I failed you.
“But I never forgot what I promised you all those years ago. You’ve always been the only one I wanted to marry, from the very start until now.”
Sophia gazed at Easton, and all the grievances and pain she had buried in her heart for years were suddenly brought to light by his words.
Tears welled up in her bright eyes, tracing silent paths down her cheeks.
Easton reached out, gently brushing away Sophia’s tears before pulling her into his arms, holding her close. “Sophia, will you give me a chance to make things right? Let me spend the rest of my life loving you, with everything I have.”
