456.Chapter 456
Frank grabbed her arm, his voice tense, “Are you really this worried about Easton? Did you forget how he treated you back then?”
Sophia shook off his hand. “But he’s saved me so many times. I can’t just stand by and watch if he’s in danger,” she replied.
Frank’s face was all twisted up. “Sophia, deep down, you still love him, don’t you?” he asked.
Sophia’s frown tightened even more. ‘Seriously, what’s he trying to get at, asking me this now?’ she thought.
She didn’t bother replying and rushed after Ryan and Fletcher.
Frank watched Sophia walk away, a sinister glint flickering in his eyes. His whole vibe turned cold and cutting.
May noticed that Frank seemed nothing like his usual warm and easygoing self, but she just couldn’t put her finger on what was wrong with him.
Ryan and the others quickly made their way back to the center of the ski resort.
The avalanche loomed just ahead, and everyone was tense and anxious. The search team was calling out, hoping to find any sign of Easton and his crew.
The wind and snow kept getting worse, and for the first time, Sophia felt what it really meant when every step felt like a battle.
They’d been searching for almost an hour, but there wasn’t a single sign of Easton or his team.
As the minutes ticked by, Sophia’s fear only grew stronger.
“Ryan, I see two people ahead!” Fletcher called out.
Ryan and Sophia followed Fletcher’s voice and hurried over, only to find it was two of Easton’s bodyguards.
“Where’s Easton?” Ryan asked urgently as he rushed up to them.
“We were following Easton down the mountain when the avalanche hit. He saw a big tree about to fall and shoved us out of the way, hard. When we turned back, we saw him and Warren buried under the snow,” one of the bodyguards explained.
He continued, “We scrambled up and tried to get to them to pull them out, but more trees kept falling, blocking us from reaching where Easton and Warren were buried.”
He added, “We couldn’t do anything except keep searching for the rescue team, and finally we ran into you guys.”
The other bodyguard jumped in, “We need to get over there now. Easton and Warren are buried deep under the snow. If we don’t get them out fast, they’re not going to make it.”
Sophia’s face turned pale as a ghost, her hands shaking, and cold sweat drenching her back.
She kept muttering to herself, almost in denial, “Easton’s going to be fine. He’ll be okay. He’ll be okay.”
Sophia hurried after the bodyguards, stumbling a bit as she made her way down the mountain.
But before she’d gone far, Ryan and Fletcher pulled her back. “Sophia, don’t go! It’s way too dangerous ahead. There could be another avalanche any second. Stay here and wait for them,” he suggested.
Sophia shook them off. “Just let me go. I’m going with them to find Easton,” she said.
Sophia followed close behind, barely daring to breathe, her heart pounding as she kept praying over and over that Easton would be okay.
As they made their way forward, Sophia watched the search team digging through the snow and clearing away fallen trees, but still, there was no trace of Easton or Warren anywhere.
Her nerves were stretched to the breaking point. The sky was getting darker, which meant it was only going to get harder to find them.
She hadn’t gone far before her legs buckled and she dropped to her knees, tears pouring down her cheeks. “Easton, are you lying to me again?” Sophia cried.
Her heart twisted in pain. ‘You promised you’d love me for the rest of your life. You can’t just break your word. You can’t leave me like this…’ she thought desperately.
Ryan and Fletcher hurried over, trying to help her up.
“Sophia…” Suddenly, she heard a voice she knew Successfully unlocked!
Sophia’s heart was pounding out of her chest as she looked up, tears sutaining down her face. And then she saw it, Warren helping Easton, both of them stumbling out of the gray blizzard.
