He continued with regret, “I was supposed to go with Murray to sign the contract as his backup, but there was a blizzard in Yorkland that day.

“Murray was in a hurry. The project had been in the works for almost a year, and Stella was pushing him hard.

“He didn’t want to wait, so without telling me, he grabbed my authorization and headed out alone. Because of the weather, he got into a car accident on the way… And he didn’t survive.

“Not long after Murray passed, I had Gordon look into the new energy project. That’s when we stumbled onto the truth. Vivian was the real puppet master behind that company.

“Turns out, Murray’s accident was all orchestrated by Vivian. If I’d been the one who died that day, she would’ve swooped back to Jenston and snatched up Foster Group’s shares without a second thought.

“But she never saw it coming. I’d already backed out halfway through the project. And with the weather that day, I couldn’t make it to Yorkland to meet up with Murray. In the end, Murray ended up taking the fall for me.”

Now Sophia finally understood why Easton always took care of David. He felt like he owed Murray, because of what happened. David never even got to meet his dad.

Even after all the trouble Stella caused, Easton didn’t just walk away from David. Instead, he entrusted David to Katherine, making sure the boy would be looked after.

David was the only family that Murray ever left behind in this world.

Sophia hugged Easton tightly, feeling a wave of sympathy for him. She knew how much pain he was carrying. His own mother had tried to hurt him over and over. No wonder he’d grown up so guarded, so distant from everyone.

His childhood left scars that ran deep.

Sophia’s parents had passed away when she was young, but she’d never been without warmth. Edward treated her like his own daughter, and Julian and her other brother always protected her, showering her with love.

Easton, on the other hand, had spent his years before fifteen living under someone else’s roof. Aunt Evelyn was kind, but nothing could ever fill the hole left by his parents’ absence.

“Easton, all that pain is in the past now. You have Irene, me, and Lucas. We’re family, and we’re going to be happy together,” Sophia said softly.

Easton turned to Sophia, his eyes shining with warmth as he pulled her into his arms. “Honestly, I’m happier than I’ve ever been, because I have you now.”

Frank was at the chamber of commerce’s private dinner party tonight. He knew Vivian and Easton were meeting up, and there was no way he’d pass up a front-row seat to the drama between mother and son.

He’d been keeping an eye on things from a private suite on the hotel’s second floor. As for what they were talking about, he didn’t need to listen in. He could pretty much guess what was going down.

“Mr. Hayes, Miss Vaughn and Ms. Roth have set the official signing for next week. The Bluewave Hotel project is about to kick off,” one of his men reported.

Frank took a sip of his wine. “Good. Arrange more business meetings, and make sure Charlotte spends more time with Sophia. There’s a design exhibition in Almere next month. Have Charlotte invite Sophia to go with her.”

“Yes, Mr. Hayes,” the man replied.

“Virginia has already got people over in Windmere. Work closely with her team, and keep an eye on Easton. If he makes a move toward Windmere, I want to know right away,” Frank said.

“Got it, Mr. Hayes. I understand,” the man replied.

Frank stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out at the stars in the distance, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
