Either the sunlight was way too bright and she had to get up to yank the curtains shut, or the maids cleaning in the garden were making way too much noise, so she marched out to the balcony and snapped at them, totally fed up.

With sleep completely out of reach, she just got more and more irritable.

She wandered back to her study and collapsed into the massage chair. Half an hour of quiet passed, and the storm inside her finally began to fade. Her nerves slowly unwound as she sat there in silence.

The steady hum of the massage chair unexpectedly soothed Sophia’s nerves, calming her restless mood. Bit by bit, drowsiness crept up on her, and she could finally feel herself drifting toward sleep.

When Sophia woke up that afternoon, May called her, “Hey Sophia, I just got to the office at Crestview, and Emily told me you took the afternoon off. Are you okay?”

Sophia was sipping some milk as she spoke, “It’s nothing, really. I’ve just been dealing with insomnia lately, so I’ve been feeling pretty worn out. I got a few hours of sleep at home this afternoon, so I’m feeling a lot better now.”

“How about I come over and have dinner with you tonight?” May suggested.

“Sounds good! I’ll call Charlotte and Emily, too. Having a few more people around will make it livelier,” Sophia replied.

At seven that evening, May arrived at Silvermoon Bay half an hour before Charlotte and Emily.

Sophia was in the kitchen, whipping up some desserts.

“Babe, I haven’t seen you in just a few days, and you look so much thinner,” May said, her voice full of concern.

Sophia touched her face. “No, I’ve actually been eating more lately. I guess I just haven’t been sleeping well, so I probably just look a bit worn out.”

May helped her carry the soup to the dining room.

“Are you missing Easton and the kids too much? If work isn’t too crazy, maybe you should go over to Menolia and spend some time with them,” she suggested.

Sophia had been thinking about that herself today.

“Edward just got better, and Annie’s pregnant now. I’m just not comfortable leaving them alone. Let’s wait until Nicolas and Derrick get back from Riverdale. Maybe Easton will be done with his work soon anyway,” she refused.

May nodded. “Alright, but make sure you get some rest while you’re home. If you get bored, just give me a call.”

Sophia smiled. “Okay, I will.”

Just as she finished speaking, the maid showed Charlotte and Emily in.

Sophia walked over with a big smile. “Right on time! Dinner’s ready. Should we open a bottle tonight?” she suggested.

Both Charlotte and Emily nodded. “Sure!”

It was a rare treat to have Sophia cooking herself, and May was over the moon. “Sophia, I haven’t tasted your food in ages! Honestly, it’s even better than I remember.”

May couldn’t help but give Sophia a big thumbs-up as she dug in..

Emily grinned and teased, “May, I think I’m even luckier than you! Sophia sometimes brings homemade lunch to the office, and she always saves a portion for me.”

May shot Sophia a mock-jealous look. “You’re so biased! I don’t care, I’m coming over for dinner every night until Easton gets back.”

Charlotte raised her hand and pleaded, “Me too.”

Sophia and May both turned to her and started laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Charlotte asked, puzzled.

May teased, “Unless you can ditch your clingy boyfriend first.”

‘Charlotte’s cheeks turned bright red. “What are you talking about?”

Sophia slung an arm around Charlotte’s shoulders. “We’re not laughing at you; we’ve just happy for you. Come on, let’s raise a glass for our very own Mrs. Hayes.”

Dinner ended on a cheerful note, and Sophia was feeling a bit buzzed. After her shower, exhaustion hit her hard. She thought the alcohol would help her crash right away, but instead, she just kept tossing and turning, and sleep slipped further away.
