After Charlotte got into the car, she was clearly nervous, probably because it was her first time with a job like this. Dexter held her hand the whole way.

He whispered in her ear, “Don’t be nervous. I’m your ace in the hole. Just say the word, and I’ll do whatever you need.”

Charlotte gave a soft, shy smile, her gaze dropping. She replied, “Okay.”

Dexter accompanied Charlotte and Arthur to their newly built villa in Almere. It wasn’t huge, but for Arthur, it was more than enough.

Charlotte helped Arthur, saying, “Take it easy, Grandpa. The house was just cleaned, so the floors might be slippery.”

Arthur was the artistic type: proud and aloof. He even seemed a little put off by Charlotte helping him.

“Alright, I’m fine. I’ll just take my time looking around. You and Dexter just wait here for me,” Arthur said.

Charlotte knew her grandfather was like this and didn’t take it to heart.

Arthur made his way upstairs alone.

Dexter walked over to Charlotte and pulled her close. He said, “You’re nothing like the rest of your family. Lucky for me, my future wife is elegant, gentle, and knows how to carry herself.”

Charlotte thought Dexter always sounded like he had honey on his tongue. She said, “Dexter, did you chase after a lot of girls before? You really know how to charm a girl.”

Dexter took Charlotte’s hand and led her out to the garden. He said, “Honestly, you’re the only one I’ve ever gone after. Not gonna lie, this is the first time I’ve ever held a girl’s hand, or been this close to one.”

Charlotte stared at him, disbelief written all over her face.

Dexter could tell Charlotte didn’t believe him, but he didn’t mind. He’d tell her all about his past, sooner or later.

After Charlotte finished showing Arthur around the house, Mason called right away. He said the family dinner was all set, and if they left now, they’d arrive just in time.

Dexter took Charlotte’s hand and said, “Don’t worry about a thing at dinner. I’m right by your side, always.”

“I know. You be careful too. June’s always got bodyguards around her, and Mason’s super cautious about everything. If anything weird happens, promise me you’ll put your own safety first,” Charlotte said.

Dexter ruffled her hair and replied, “Got it.”

When they arrived at the hotel, sure enough, Mason was there with June, waiting at the entrance. Bodyguards were lined up on both sides.

As soon as Mason saw Dexter get out of the car, he hurried over with June and shook his hand. Mason said, Dexter, it’s been a while.”

Dexter gave a faint smile and said, “Mr. Ford, long time no see.”

Mason brought June forward to introduce her. He said, “This is June Jefferson, executive director of

Jefferson Group. You’ve met before at the Hayes Group’s event.”

Dexter gave June a polite nod and greeted, “Hello, Miss Jefferson.”

“Hello, Mr. Hayes,” June replied.

June lit up when she saw Charlotte. She said, “Hey, Charlotte, it’s been ages. Last time I was in Jenston, I was in such a rush I barely got to talk to you. Tonight, we’ve got all the time in the world. Let’s catch up.”

Charlotte felt a wave of discomfort as June got closer. She forced a smile and said, “Sure.”

Dexter kept holding Charlotte’s hand. He said, “We will be family soon. We should all hang out more and get to know each other better.”
