79 Chapter 79
79.Chapter 79
Once she was back in her office, Sophia picked up May’s call. “Sophia, you totally called it. The police said the whole area’s surveillance footage from the accident was knocked out by a lightning storm that night, so not a single thing got recorded.
“I dug a little deeper, too, and the word is that after the crash, the police checked everything and, sure enough, there were real signs of the cameras being damaged.”
Sophia gave a chilly laugh. “Hmph, Stella is on another level. I’ve been out of Jenston for years, and I never thought her network and the moves she’s pulling now would be way beyond anything I ever imagined.”
“Sophia, I’m telling you, Stella’s turned seriously dangerous. She’s not just some regular news anchor anymore. After all these years since you and Easton split, she still won’t let you breathe. It honestly got me really worried,” May said, her voice tense with concern.
Between that drama with Crestview Group’s new property and now this car crash, May just couldn’t help but warn Sophia.
“Don’t worry, May. I hear you. I’ll watch my back from now on,” Sophia promised.
After chatting for a bit, Sophia had just hung up when her phone rang again. She glanced at the caller ID and then smiled softly and greeted, “Grandma.”
Irene hadn’t seen Sophia in days. She remembered hearing Sophia had been away for a business trip, and now Sophia was back but hadn’t dropped by. Irene started to miss her, so she picked up the phone and called. ” Sophia, are you busy right now?”
“I just got back to the office, so I’m free right now,” Sophia replied.
“Do you have time to come hang out with me today? The book you got me finally showed up yesterday, but Grace can’t figure out the new app, so I can’t even read it,” Irene whined, deliberately sounding aggrieved, just to tug at Sophia’s heartstrings.
Sophia couldn’t help but chuckle. ‘Grandma’s got the same tricks as Lucas-always trying to win me over with that cute act, and if she can’t, she plays the sad card. Must run in the family,’ she teased inwardly.
“I’m free this afternoon. Once I finish up at work, I’ll come see you. But you have to promise me you’ll get some rest at noon, or you won’t have the energy to read your book later,” Sophia said, her tone gentle but firm.
As soon as Irene heard Sophia would be coming over this afternoon, her whole face lit up.
Sophia shook her head with a smile, hung up the call, and stared at Lucas’s picture on her phone. Looking at him now that he was getting older, she couldn’t help thinking that there was something in his eyes that was uncannily like Easton.
That afternoon, Sophia left work two hours early, carrying a few local treats she’d picked up in Harlinton, and took them with her to the nursing home.
As soon as she stepped inside, Sophia spotted Easton in the room, but Irene and Grace were nowhere to be found. ‘Grandma’s definitely up to some mischief again, Sophia thought, letting out a silent sigh.
No way she could bail now. She squared her shoulders and headed in, bracing herself for whatever surprise was waiting.
Easton spoke up first. “Grandma’s off with the nurse for her physical therapy, but she should be back any minute.”
Sophia just nodded, trying to keep her cool. She walked in and placed the gifts on the coffee table. Just then, Easton came up behind her, quietly carrying a cup of coffee.
She spun around and accidentally spilled his coffee, staining his suit. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were right behind me,” Sophia said, flustered. ‘Seriously, what’s he doing standing right behind me like that?’ she wondered, slightly annoyed.
Easton slipped off his jacket and held it out to her, with a faint smile. “It’s fine. Just help me get it washed.”
