94 Chapter 94
94.Chapter 94
Emily got into the car, and May and Sophia immediately grabbed her hands, worried she’d break down.
Sophia asked, “Julian, May, do you guys know something?”
Julian sat in the passenger seat, his face dark and brooding. After a pause, he finally said, “The police got hold of all the hotel’s surveillance videos. It’s true that someone carried Emily into that room, but before she went in, Nicolas was already there.
“He left not even twenty minutes later, and then another guy went in right after.”
Sophia could feel Emily trembling from head to toe. She whispered, “What do you mean? Time doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t prove he didn’t hurt her. Emily’s covered in bruises. The DNA matched Nicolas’s.
“Besides, she never went in there on her own. Those bastards drugged her and dumped her inside. The doctors found sedatives in her blood.”
May sighed heavily and started breaking things down. “Emily’s got marks all over from Nicolas hitting her, but that’s not enough to charge him with rape. At best, it’s assault.
“The real headache is, the traces left behind and the DNA only belonged to another man, not Nicolas.
“He was way too careful, probably used protection, and took everything with him when he left. The worst thing is, the blood test showed stuff that knocks her out, and hallucinogens.
“They might spin this against her-pretend she’s some addict who slept around. Basically, with the evidence we’ve got so far, there’s no way to prove Nicolas actually had sex with her.”
Julian continued, “Here’s the crucial part-Nicolas has an alibi. After leaving that room, he went straight down to another suite downstairs to be with another woman.
“According to his statement, he was supposed to meet his girlfriend, so he took some legal stimulants beforehand to prepare himself.
“When Emily was carried into the room, he claims he was so out of it that he mistook her for his girlfriend and acted out violently.
“But he insists he never actually went through with it. Once he realized what was happening, he hurried out and arranged to meet his girlfriend in a different suite.
“As for the guy who came in later, Nicolas says he doesn’t know him, and can’t say if that was the man who brought Emily to his room.
“The police reviewed all the hallway surveillance videos. From start to finish, the only one who physically interacted with Emily was that second man, and all the DNA evidence found belongs to him.”
Sophia’s heart sank at every word she heard.
Emily’s face was deathly pale, tears spilling down as she shook her head. “Sophia, please, you have to believe me. I’m not lying. It was Nicolas-he raped me first. Only afterward did that other man come in.”
May soothed her gently. “Emily, we believe you-every single thing you said. But the evidence we have right now just can’t pin the crime on him. We’re telling you everything because we want you to truly understand the situation.
“So please, try hard to remember if there was any detail you forgot when Nicolas lay hands on you. Maybe that’s the piece I need to help you.”
Sophia wrapped her arms around Emily, who was trembling. “Emily, I know it’s horrible to think back on it, but this could be the evidence we need. Please, you have to try and remember.”
Emily’s mind went blank. Listening to May and Julian, she felt utterly numb inside, like all hope had drained away. She realized that there really was no way left to get Nicolas convicted.
