Sebastian frowned slightly. “Amelia, are you seriously going to talk to me like this?”

The old Amelia bent over backward for him. Whenever she looked at him, her eyes sparkled with adoration. Now, her eyes held nothing but pure indifference.

“Didn’t you want to hear those polite, little fake pleasantries, Mr. Sterling? I gave them to you, so why are you mad?”

When it came to passive–aggressive sarcasm, Amelia had literally never lost.

Back in the village, she used to fight with those nosy old hags from one end of the town to the other, making eighty–year–old ladies cough up blood from pure rage. Her battle record was genuinely legendary.

Pissing off a proud peacock like Sebastian? That was child’s play.

Sure enough, Sebastian’s face darkened visibly. “Amelia, don’t test my patience.”

“Oh? Mr. Sterling didn’t like my tone? Let me try another one…”

“Enough!”

Sebastian growled, his face looking terrifyingly stormy. He let go of her. “I’m giving you a few days to think about what you did wrong. Don’t come looking for me until you figure it out.”

With that, Sebastian actually stormed off, totally pissed at himself.

Watching his broad back retreat, Amelia let out a breathy, unbelievable laugh. “I need to think about what I did wrong? Are you kidding me?!”

What did I do wrong?! He’s the one who needs to do some soul–searching!

Back at the office, Sebastian only got angrier the more he thought about it. He literally orchestrated that entire dramatic courtroom show for her, completely sacrificing his own reputation so she could win the case, and this woman still didn’t think she was wrong!

“Mr. Sterling, Evelyn has been sent back to her apartment. But she said if she can’t stay at Riverview Estates, she wants to move back into the main Sterling mansion.”

Ever since Amelia mentioned she didn’t like Evelyn staying at Riverview, Sebastian made her

move out.

After her little stunt at the courthouse, Sebastian’s patience for her was officially at zero. “She can stay wherever she wants, as long as it’s not the main mansion or Riverview.”

He absolutely did not want to see Evelyn right now.

Ryan nodded, then placed a file on the desk. “These are the background checks I ran. Take a look, sir.”

The files were so horrifying, Ryan didn’t even want to say the details out loud.

As Sebastian read the report, his eyes grew colder and colder, until he finally ripped the papers to shreds.

“Evelyn… Unbelievable!”

Turns out Evelyn had been living the high life abroad. She had actually gone through six heart transplants–and the hearts were harvested straight from living donors!

She had put on this innocent act and played him for a fool for years!

“Mr. Sterling, if Ms. Bennett hadn’t noticed something was wrong with her heart, you probably would have been kept in the dark forever.”

Sebastian shot him a deadly glare, and Ryan immediately shut up. He definitely talked too much today. Evelyn had always held a special place in his boss’s life, and her position wasn’t something ordinary people could shake.

“Dig deeper into what Evelyn and that man were doing abroad. Make sure you don’t tip them off.”

He had a gut feeling Evelyn was hiding something way bigger!

A bad feeling washed over Ryan. He opened his mouth, but eventually decided to keep quiet.

Night fell. Sebastian stood by the massive floor–to–ceiling windows, looking down at the glittering city lights. Suddenly, something Cyrus had said popped into his head.

“Sebastian, do you really love your fiancée? Or rather, do you even know her at all?”

Sebastian felt a sudden wave of intense frustration. He downed a hard shot of brandy, the liquor burning his throat as his eyes darkened.

Do I know Amelia? I know her better than anyone!

Ever since they met in the Amazon rainforest all those years ago, her face had been burned into his mind. It never faded; it only grew clearer.

He suffered through hell to take over the Sterling family, clawing his way up to become the king of Kingsley, and his end goal had always been the same.
