“Shut up.” Vanessa rolled her eyes at her, then took Sophia’s hand and practically laid the praise on thick. “Our whole family agrees that Sophia is much better suited to be the future Mrs. Sterling. It’s just a shame Eleanor insisted on the Bennetts‘ biological daughter back then. Too bad Sophia didn’t have better luck with her birth parents.”

This backhanded compliment made Sophia’s face turn red, then pale.

She glared at Amelia in the distance with venomous eyes and gritted her teeth. “Mrs. Sterling, this is ultimately up to Sebastian. Amelia is notoriously ill–behaved. I just hope he sees her true colors.”

“What’s going on here? Why so lively?”

Carol Thorne had just finished greeting some socialites and walked out of the living room, noticing the crowd gathered nearby as if watching some kind of sideshow.

Seeing her approach, Vanessa and the others immediately greeted her with utmost respect.

Carol Thorne was in her fifties, with a few silver streaks in her hair. She wore a dark red embroidered qipao and exuded pure elegance.

They say time never defeats a true beauty. Even in her fifties, her skin looked incredibly hydrated and firm. At first glance, she looked like a stunning woman in her early thirties.

Sophia seized the opportunity and spoke up in front of Carol. “Mrs. Thorne, my sister Amelia is being a bit too flashy over there. I’ll go talk to her in a minute, please don’t mind her.”

Eudora quickly chimed in. “Yes, Mrs. Thorne. My daughter lacks discipline and doesn’t know her manners. Please don’t hold it against her.”

The moment she finished speaking, Selena, who was linking arms with her mother, started jumping up and down with excitement. “Mom! That’s my best friend, Amelia!”

As her daughter squealed, Carol smiled with absolute adoration. “Oh! So that’s the Amelia you’re always talking about! Go bring her over so I can get a good look at her!”

“Okay, I’ll go get her right now!”

Selena rolled her eyes at Vanessa and the others, then happily ran off to find Amelia.

Carol watched her daughter go with a warm smile, then pretended she hadn’t heard the previous remarks. She asked, looking completely surprised, “Mrs. Bennett, what were you saying just now?”

Just as Sophia was about to repeat her trash–talk, Eudora stopped her just in time. “Mrs. Thorne, I was just saying I wanted to call Amelia over, but I didn’t expect to trouble your daughter to go get her.”

The smile didn’t reach Carol’s eyes. “My daughter doesn’t usually have many friends, but she’s incredibly close with Amelia. Didn’t you know that?”

Eudora shook her head, smiling awkwardly.

She had only found out about Amelia and Selena’s friendship recently. By the time she knew, it was too late–this brat had actually teamed up with Selena to completely ruin Sophia!

Vanessa caught the underlying warning in Carol’s words. She was making it crystal clear that she favored Amelia. If they dared to target her, Carol would absolutely shut them out.

Selena dragged Amelia out of the crowd and practically threw her in front of Carol. “Mom, this is my bestie, Amelia!”

Amelia bowed politely to Carol. “Mrs. Thorne, how have you been lately?”

Carol held Amelia’s small hands, looking like she couldn’t get enough of her. “Thanks to you, I’ve been doing wonderfully.”

Eudora and Sophia exchanged confused looks. What was up with this super familiar greeting? It didn’t feel like they were meeting for the first time–it felt like they were old friends reuniting.

“Amelia, did you know Mrs. Thorne before this?” Eudora couldn’t hold it in and blurted out her suspicion on the spot.

Amelia and Carol exchanged a knowing glance and shook their heads silently.

Carol smiled very gently. “If I had known Amelia earlier, I definitely would have treated her like my own daughter. Selena just talks about her so much, we naturally feel close.”

“Oh, I see.” Eudora finally let out a sigh of relief.

I thought Mrs. Thorne actually knew Amelia. That scared me half to death!

“Ladies, let’s not stand outside. Let’s head in and chat.” After officially greeting the crowd, Carol turned to Amelia affectionately. “Amelia, I need to take Selena around to say hello to some people. Just hang out here for a bit, okay?”
