The Brittany family wasn’t as powerful as the Bennetts, but they had deep roots and were related to Katherine Sterling. They had clout.
People in the room felt obligated to take their side.
Sophia’s eyes flickered with a hidden agenda. “Brittany, it’s my fault for not teaching her better. I’ll apologize on her behalf.”
“Sophia, why are you apologizing for that brat?!”
The socialites in the room showered Sophia with praise for her “grace.”
“See? That’s what a real Kingsley upbringing looks like. She’s a world apart from that country girl.”
“Adopted or not, she has ten times the class. Who even invited that tacky girl anyway? It’s embarrassing.”
Sophia basked in the praise, soaking up the vanity of the moment.
So what if Amelia replaced me in the Sterling marriage? She’s still beneath my feet, nothing more than an ant.
Just as she was feeling untouchable, Amelia’s voice rang out, cool and clear.
A girl who can’t stop swearing is a reflection of her own family. Does the Brittany family really want to start trouble with me? Or do they have the balls to take on the Sterlings?”
At the mention of the Sterlings, the room went dead silent.
‘Amelia, stop using the Sterlings as a shield! You’re just a biological fluke who stole Sophia’s spot. Do you really think they’ll marry a peasant like you? Dream on!”
Brittany’s frantic screaming made the other women back away.
The Brittany family must be suicidal to bring up the Sterlings like that.
They needed to keep their distance before they got caught in the crossfire.
Amelia’s expression went cold. “Brittany, you really are an idiot. I am the future matriarch of the Sterling family. Insulting me is insulting Sebastian Sterling.”
Brittany’s legs went weak, and she slumped to the floor. Her eyes widened as a suffocating wave of terror
washed over her.
Sebastian Sterling was the ultimate taboo in Kingsley. People were terrified to even mention his name, and she had just let Amelia bait her into a trap.
Fear paralyzed her, but she still tried to hiss, “You did that on purpose! You…”
“Apologize now, and I might consider asking Sebastian to be merciful.”
“Are you kidding? A peasant like you-”

“Wait, look who it is!”
“It’s Lady Irene!”
Nydia’s eyes lit up, and she hurried to the door. “Lady Irene! I had no idea you were back in the country. Why didn’t you tell us you were coming to the gala?”
Irene Gunter was in her forties and had never married. As the personal designer for the Queen, her international status was absolute.
The crowd swarmed her, and Brittany immediately pivoted to sucking up to Sophia.
‘Sophia, didn’t you say you invited Lady Irene? I knew you were the one who brought her here!”
‘Lady Irene has always wanted Sophia as an apprentice. Of course she came for her!”
Sophia was actually surprised to see her. She had sent several invites to Lady Irene and never gotten a reply. Was she really here for her?
She’s here. It has to be because of my invitation!
Sophia stepped forward with a beaming smile. “Lady Irene, you finally made it to Cynetia. It’s such an
honor.”
To her shock, Irene frowned and asked in accented English, “And you are…?”
Sophia’s smile froze on her face.
rene didn’t even recognize her?
‘Lady Irene, I’m Sophia Bennett. I sent you several invitations. Don’t you remember me?”
Irene’s face cleared. “Oh, right. You.”
Sophia’s confidence surged. She knew the woman remembered her!
‘Sophia is incredible. She actually got Lady Irene to show up.”
The Bennetts are going to be untouchable after tonight!”
The socialites were relentless with their praise.
Sophia was about to speak when Irene delivered a sharp, resounding slap across her cheek.
“I didn’t come because of your invite. I came because Amelia invited me.”
