Sebastian stepped out of the black Bentley, pushed his gold–rimmed glasses up with one long finger, and strode over to Amelia’s side.

“Vanessa,” he said in a voice like ice, “before you start judging my fiancée, maybe take a good look at yourself first. Or do you have a problem with me?”

The second he appeared, the whole room felt ten degrees colder. Vanessa’s shoulders twitched. Chloe kept her head down, too scared to even breathe.

In the Sterling family, Sebastian was basically God. His word was final.

Vanessa, the second wife who’d married into the family, had never gotten an ounce of respect from him. He didn’t call her “Mom.” He didn’t even call her “stepmother.” Just Vanessa–cold and flat.

“Sebastian, I… I would never,” she stammered, forcing a smile that looked more like a grimace. “I was only joking with Amelia…”

“Yeah. You’d better be.” Sebastian’s laugh was short and sharp. He didn’t even glance at her. “Come on, Grandma’s been waiting.”

He turned and started walking deeper into the mansion without another word. Amelia tilted her head, flashed Vanessa and Chloe a tiny, satisfied smile, and hurried after him.

The moment they were gone, Chloe finally dared to look up. She grabbed Vanessa’s arm and whined, “Did you see how smug that little gold–digger looked? She’s totally going to sink her claws into Sebastian!”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed into two venomous slits as she stared at Amelia’s retreating back. Her voice came out in a low hiss between clenched teeth. “Let the bitch enjoy her little victory for now. I heard she just had a huge blowout with the Bennett family. Trust me–there are people who want her gone even more than we do.”

The Sterling mansion was massive. It took a full five minutes of walking behind Sebastian before they finally reached Eleanor’s private quarters.

The second the door opened, the sharp smell of medicine hit them. A couple of doctors in white coats stood by the bed while Eleanor lay there watching TV.

“Grandma,” Sebastian said quietly.

Eleanor’s face lit up the moment she saw her grandson. Sebastian! You’re back!”

“Hi, Grandma,” Amelia added softly, stepping forward.

“Come here, sweetheart. Let me look at you properly.”

Eleanor took Amelia’s hand and beamed. The more she studied Amelia’s pretty face, the happier she got. “I heard you saved my life yesterday. I owe you everything It this brat ever gives you any trouble, you come straight to me—I’ll beat him up myself!”

For the first time in her life (outside of Victor), Amelia atually felt what real family warmth was like.
