m happy.” I said and he looked at me.
“Yeah?” He asked.
“Yeah.” I said.
“I haven’t been able to say that honestly for a long time.” I added as Jace moved closer.
“You deserve to be.” He said.
“I know.” I said as I rested my head against his chest.
“I think that’s what scares me.” I said.
“What?” He asked.
“Being happy.” I said as his hand moved gently through my hair.
“Why?” He asked.
“Because when something feels this good, you start wondering how long it’s going to last.” I said
and he was quiet for several seconds.
“Then don’t worry about how long.” He said and I lifted my head.
“What?” I asked.
“Just enjoy it.” He said and I smiled.
“You’re surprisingly wise sometimes.” I said.
“Sometimes?” He asked.
“Don’t push it.” I said and he laughed.
I kissed him, and the kiss slowly deepened as the afternoon sun moved across the lake. The rest of
the world seemed to disappear around us, and for once, neither of us needed to think about what
waited back in town.
We moved closer together, and the quiet afternoon became something more intimate, something that belonged entirely to us.
Later, I lay beside Jace beneath the tree with my head resting against his shoulder, and I felt lighter than I had in weeks.
The lake glittered beneath the afternoon sun, while the breeze moved gently through the leaves above us and Jace looked down at me.

“Better?” He asked and I smiled.
“Much.” I said as he kissed my forehead.
“Good.” He said as I closed my eyes.
“I wish we could stay here.” I said.
“We could.” He said.
“Don’t tempt me.” I said.
“I’m serious.” He said.
“So am I.” I said and he laughed softly as I shifted closer.
“When we go back, everything will still be waiting.” He said.
“I know.” I said.
“The rumours.” He said.
“I know.” I said.
“The club.” He said.
“I know.” I said.
“The Black Reapers.” He said as his expression darkened slightly.
Clark
“I know. But today was ours.” I said and I reached up and touched his cheek and he turned his head and kissed my palm.
“Every day with you is ours.” He said as my chest tightened and I smiled.
“I’m really happy.” I said.
Jace looked at me for several seconds and his expression became softer than I’d ever seen it.
“Seeing you smile makes every problem worth facing.” He said as I stared at him.
“You really know how to make a girl emotional.” I said.
“Good.” He said and I laughed.
He kissed me again before we packed everything away.
The ride back was quieter, although I didn’t mind. I wrapped my arms around him and rested my cheek against his back and every mile brought us closer to the life we had temporarily escaped.
By the time the first buildings appeared, the sun was beginning to lower and I lifted my head.

CHAPTER 88 2
Something looked wrong. A dark column stretched into the sky above the town.
At first, I thought it was cloud but then another plume rose behind the buildings and my stomach dropped.
“Jace.” I said and he looked back.
