CHAPTER 118-2

If someone had discovered that room, didn’t know what they would have taken.

I opened the basement door and Jace followed me down the stairs.

The lights flickered before coming on, and I looked around.

Everything appeared untouched. Boxes were stacked exactly where I remembered leaving them.

Old furniture covered the far wall and the shelves were dusty, and nothing seemed disturbed. Derek walked around slowly.

“Does anything look different?” Derek asked and I shook my head.

“No.” I said as Jace examined the shelves.

“Then they didn’t find this.” Jace said.

Relief washed through me, although it didn’t last long.

Because if they had searched the apartment and missed the hidden basement, then I had no idea how close they had come.

We returned upstairs, and Jace called Mason. Within twenty minutes, several Iron Vipers members arrived.

I watched them move around the apartment, checking windows, doors, and the surrounding area.

The attention made me uncomfortable. Not because I didn’t appreciate it, but because I hated needing it. So Jace eventually pulled me aside.

“I’m putting extra security around Lawson Customs.” He said but I shook my head.

“Jace.” I said.

“Paige.” He said.

“I don’t want the garage to become a fortress.” I said.

“It’s already a target.” He said.

“We don’t know that.” I said.

“We know someone broke into your apartment.” He said and I sighed.

“I know.” I said.

“And they were searching for something.” He said.

“I know that too.” I said.

“Then let me protect you.” He said and I looked at him.

“Moving out would feel like running.” I said as his expression softened.

“I’m not asking you to move.” He said.

“I don’t want to leave my apartment.” I said.

“I know.” He said.

“I don’t want to stop working at the garage.” I said.

“I don’t want Victor or whoever else is behind this deciding where I live, where I work, or what I do.” I said and Jace reached for my hand.

“I’m not going to let them decide.” He said.

“Then don’t ask me to disappear.” I said and he nodded.

“I won’t.” He said as I leaned against him.

“I need to feel like I still have control over my own life.” I said.

“You do.” He said.

“Then keep me safe without taking that away.” I said.

“I can do that.” He said as he kissed my forehead.

“I promise.” He said.

Later that afternoon, we returned to Lawson Customs. Mia was already working in the office, while Ben was finishing an engine rebuild.

The moment Mia saw my expression, she knew something had happened.

“What happened?” She asked.

“Someone broke into my apartment.” I said and her eyes widened.

“Are you serious?” She asked.

“Nothing was stolen, but the place was searched.” I said and Mia shook her head.

“Paige, that’s terrifying.” She said.

“I know.” I said.

She came around the desk and hugged me and I held her for a moment before stepping back.

“I’m okay.” I said.

“Are you sure?” She asked.

I’m angry.” I said.

“That’s probably fair. She said as I tried to smile.

“It is.” I said and Ben came out of the workshop.

“What happened?” He asked so Mia explained and Ben’s expression hardened.

“We should increase security here too.” Ben said.

“Jace already is.” I said.

“Good.” He said.

I looked around the garage and everything seemed normal.

The smell of oil filled the air, tools hung from the walls, and the sound of an engine echoed from the workshop.

This place had always felt safe. Now I wasn’t sure I could say that anymore.

I walked into the office and sat at my desk and Mia returned to her computer while I started sorting

invoices.

For nearly an hour, we worked without talking much and then Mia frowned.

“Paige?” Mia said and I looked up.

“What?” I asked.

“Did you move this?” She asked as she pointed beneath the desk.

“Move what?” I asked.

She crouched down and reached beneath it and I stood.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” She said.
